Clinical Nurse Specialist Thoracic

A new role to join our Clinical Nurse Specialist in Thoracic. This role was originally established in 2022 and is now expanding to meet the demands of the service. The successful candidate will work in conjunction with the Band 7 already in post and Thoracic Surgeons to support the service users and larger Multidisciplinary team within Coventry and Warwickshire.
Secondment will be considered for internal candidates – if you are successful after interview, you must obtain approval from your current line manager to accept the offer.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the jobTo provide a specialist nursing service for the care and on‑going management of patients pre and post thoracic surgery. This will also include nurse‑led clinics for drain management, histology and preoperative assessments. You will participate in the provision of high‑quality care from diagnosis to treatment. You will make informed decisions within your own scope of professional practice to ensure agreed standards and targets are met.
The post holder will develop and implement opportunities for advancing nursing practice and ensuring collaborative working relationships, incorporating expert clinical practice, leadership, consultation and education.
- Accountable for own actions in accordance with Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute towards corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
- The post holder will be a designated Thoracic Clinical Nurse Specialist within the hospital and will provide expert specialist advice for patients, relative and carers in relation to cancer diagnosis and to other health care professionals.
- To provide emotional support to patients, their families and staff during difficult situations e.g. breaking bad news or following an unexpected event and ensuring the patients holistic needs are considered in the decision‑making process.
- To be an active member of the appropriate site‑specific MDT, utilising excellent communication skills, enabling maintenance of a high‑quality service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations.
- Demonstrate a high level of clinical, technical and research skills through breadth and depth of knowledge including overview of waiting lists and monitor trends for the Lung health checks launched throughout Coventry and Warwickshire.
- A knowledgeable clinical nurse specialist, supporting Patient, Relatives, Nursing staff and the Thoracic Surgeons as well as policy development within the specialty.
- To develop nurse‑led clinics and to undertake highly specialised technical and/or practical skills, including advanced health assessments and non‑medical prescribing to ensure optimum patient management.
- A resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.
