Paediatric Epilepsy Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity to provide high standard care to children and families with epilepsy. This will be in collaboration with the lead epilepsy consultant nurse, a paediatric consultant with expertise in epilepsy and the extended multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will work across the UHCW and Rugby StCross site, whilst occasionally needing to attend meetings within the community.

The post holder will be involved in developing and delivering expert patient‑centred care based on local and national guidance. Care delivered will include patient assessment, planning and implementing of specialist care, provision of advice/support and education in collaboration with the wider MDT including child protection/safeguarding teams.

The post holder will be involved in audit, assist in leading a small team, participate in network meetings and provide education to medical and nursing staff within the unit in order to improve quality and enhance care delivery.

Main duties of the job

To provide a specialist service to the child and young person with epilepsy and their carers/parents within the acute trust. Clinical Practice
  • Uses key skills of assessment, interpretation, and analysis of findings, utilising clinical expertise and judgement to:

    • Prevent inappropriate hospital admissions and promote effective hospital discharge planning, wherever possible

    • Review patients within the unit, both in the acute and outpatient setting.

    • Provide and co‑coordinate support to children and young people with epilepsy, implementing health promotion as appropriate.

    • Teach children and young people, families, and carers to competently carry out specific nursing care and procedures as required
  • Provides expert advice and support and is involved in the planning and implementation of patient specific care. Care must be communicated effectively in the form of a care plan which will be developed in collaboration with the child/young person and family.
  • Assists with planning, developing, coordinating and managing service provision for children and young people with epilepsy, supporting colleagues and junior staff.
