Software Engineer, Systems Engineer
About the Role
We are recruiting a Graduate Engineer to join our Water Team, working with UK water companies on infrastructure challenges including supporting AMP delivery, Drainage and Wastewater Management Plans (DWMPs), and Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) spills and their environmental impact. The role focuses on using engineering tools, data and automation to understand how large wastewater systems behave and how performance can be improved.
You will be trained to work with hydraulic network models and to apply optimisation and automation techniques to explore large numbers of scenarios efficiently and consistently. This role is suited to graduates who enjoy understanding complex systems, testing different approaches, and using software to support sound engineering decisions.
- Working with 1D hydraulic network models used by UK water companies to support project delivery through structured model assessment and scenario testing
- Analysing sewer network performance and the effectiveness of design and mitigation options
- Using optimisation and automation tools to run, manage and interrogate large numbers of model simulations
- Contribute to a diverse range of work with ongoing opportunities to create and innovate
- Developing scripts and small tools to improve efficiency, repeatability and quality of results
- Applying engineering judgement to interpret model outputs and support decision-making
- You will receive structured training and mentoring as part of a supportive engineering team.
We are open-minded about academic background and welcome applicants from a range of engineering and scientific disciplines, including:
- Mechanical Engineering (including automotive or aeronautical)
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Civil Engineering or related disciplines
The key requirement is an interest in analytical problem solving and in using software to understand and improve real-world engineering systems.
Skills and ExperienceEssential
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Interest in engineering simulation or CAE tools
- Willingness to learn new software and technical methods
- Proactive approach to tackling technical problems and contributing ideas within a team
Desirable
- Experience with CAE or simulation tools through university projects, internships or personal work
- Exposure to 1D modelling or network-based simulation, hydraulic, GIS tools or otherwise
- Any experience of coding or scripting
- Particular interest in Python, Ruby or C#
- Evidence of curiosity through projects, hobbies or activities involving building, analysing or optimising systems
- Join a team that values engineering judgement, curiosity and initiative over rigid process
- Work on a variety of real engineering challenges that influence regulatory decisions and infrastructure investment
- Develop specialist skills in optimisation, automation and simulation-driven engineering
- Gain early experience with advanced workflows used in industry
- Flexibility around core working hours with safeguarded lunch breaks
- Quarterly team socials and socials with The Ingenium Group
We encourage engineers to ask questions, test ideas and improve how work is done. If you enjoy solving problems, working with simulation tools and applying engineering principles to complex systems, you will fit in well.
