The roleWe are looking for a Research Engineer – Design for Additive Manufacturing to join our Engineering Design Group in Coventry. As a Research Engineer, you will play an important role in delivering technical elements of projects under the guidance of experienced colleagues. You’ll work across a variety of sectors and technologies, contributing to concept generation, detailed design, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
This is a hands‑on role where you’ll have the opportunity to learn, grow, and make a real impact.
- Take ownership of designated technical tasks, ensuring they meet customer requirements and are delivered on time and within budget.
- Contribute to the team’s strategy by supporting capability‑building projects and developing an understanding of our roadmap and project portfolio.
- Explore and introduce new technologies to the MTC, undertaking innovative engineering research.
- Support continuous improvement activities and contribute to health and safety documentation.
- Work in line with MTC policies and values, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
- A degree in Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
- Competence in CAD modelling, simulation, and engineering drawings.
- An understanding of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L‑PBF) processes and associated design rules.
- Awareness of the product development lifecycle, including TRL and MRL, to ensure designs are ready for scale‑up and manufacture.
- A proactive and adaptable approach, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Practical, hands‑on experience and a problem‑solving mindset.
- Good interpersonal and organisational skills, with the ability to communicate clearly in writing and presentations.
- A willingness to share knowledge and support colleagues’ development.
- Familiarity with the engineering design process and experience using Siemens NX.
- Awareness of other additive manufacturing processes (e.g., Material Extrusion, Binder Jetting, Directed Energy Deposition) and traditional manufacturing methods.
- Ability to work on multiple projects while fostering a collaborative and positive team culture.
- Experience engaging with customers to build strong relationships and support repeat business.
- Whilst not obligatory, there is a preference that you are willing and able to apply for Developed Vetting security clearance by the UK Government and undertake duties associated with this level of clearance.
