We work with young people who haven't been able to stay in mainstream school. Students with EHCPs. Students with complex SEMH needs. Students who've been excluded, who've experienced trauma, who've been let down before. The ones other providers find too difficult, or don't have the skills to reach.
If that's the kind of work you're drawn to, keep reading.
What the work actually looks likeYou'll work 1:1 with a small number of students, mostly in their home or local community. Every young person you work with will have a Therapeutic Tutoring Plan written specifically for them - their needs, their goals, their pace. You'll have real context before you walk through the door.
Sessions aren't about getting through a syllabus. They're about building a relationship, creating safety, and - when the young person is ready - supporting genuine progress. We use trauma-informed approaches throughout, including training in therapeutic parenting and PACE methodology.
Why tutors stay with usWe have one of the best retention rates in the sector. That's not an accident.
We don't recruit speculatively. When we bring someone on, it's because we have real cases that are right for them. We match students to tutors carefully - your skills, your location, the student's needs. We won't take you on and leave you waiting.
Once you're with us, you get consistent, responsive support from the management team. Questions get answered. Concerns get taken seriously. You won't feel like you're on your own with a difficult situation.
Our tutors say it themselves:
"I have always had the hours I've needed and the flexibility. It's a great organisation with great people."
"The management are supportive of your work goals and help you to succeed."
"There is always someone available to support and offer advice."
The practical stuff- £32.50 per hour - one of the highest rates in the alternative education sector
- Flexible hours - you commit to what you can cover, cases are matched accordingly
- Ongoing CPD and training, including trauma-informed practice
- DBS required (we'll support you through the process if needed)
- Term-time working with some flexibility
You don't need to come from a traditional teaching background - some of our best tutors don't. But you do need:
- Experience working with young people with complex needs (SEND, SEMH, LAC, school refusal, or similar)
- The ability to build trust with a young person who may have very good reasons not to trust adults
- Patience, resilience, and the ability to meet a student where they are - not where you think they should be
- A commitment to safeguarding and professional practice
Qualifications in education, psychology, social care, youth work or related fields are an advantage but not a prerequisite. What matters most is your experience and your approach.
About HRP EducationHRPE (pronounced "Harp") is a specialist alternative education provider based in the West Midlands. We support vulnerable learners - including those with EHCPs, SEND requirements, and complex trauma histories - through tailored 1:1 tutoring and mentoring. We work with multiple Local Authorities and schools across the region, and we're rated 5.0 on Indeed by our own staff.
We're a small team that takes the work seriously. We don't do volume recruitment. If we're talking to you, it's because we think there might be a real fit.
