The Role

The Department of Physics seeks to appoint an Administrative Officer to provide high‑level financial and administrative support for the UKRI‑funded UK High‑Field Solid‑State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) National Research Facility (NRF). The role will be based in the Department of Physics, with the post holder also a member of the Physics professional services team.

You will work closely with the Director, Professor Steven Brown, the Technical Director, Dr Dinu Iuga, and the Facility Management Team (FMT – five staff across Physics and Chemistry). You will establish strong working relationships with the NRF’s Facility Executive (FE – 9 senior solid‑state NMR spectroscopist scientists from 6 UK universities) and Oversight Committee (OC), as well as with industrial users and key external partners such as spectrometer and probe manufacturers and cryogen suppliers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing administrative support to facilitate the use of the three facility instruments, serving as the first point of contact for all administrative and financial enquiries.
  • Liaising with users before, during and after their visits, including responsibility for their accommodation on campus.
  • Assisting the Director and the FMT in preparing reports for the FE, OC and UKRI, particularly financial statements and detailed spectrometer‑usage reports.
  • Organising and supporting meetings and events that promote the Facility’s activities, and maintaining the Facility’s website and social media presence.
  • Supporting flexible working arrangements (part‑time or job share) if requested.
About You

Applicants should bring a wealth of experience from a relevant administrative environment, ideally within a university research or finance setting.

  • Experience in financial administration with good knowledge of budget management, financial reporting and processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaborative work.
  • Exceptional organisation, planning and time‑management skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
