Adjunct Sociology Instructor

Overview

Iowa Western Community College is seeking a part-time Sociology instructor to join our team. The ideal candidate holds a master’s degree in Sociology (or a closely related field) with at least 12 graduate credits in sociology and is prepared to teach a variety of sociology courses in multiple modalities, including face-to‑face, hybrid, live virtual, and online asynchronous. Iowa Western uses Canvas as its learning management system.

Our current instructional need is for faculty who can teach daytime, face‑time courses in addition to online asynchronous courses. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to student success and an engaging, student‑centered teaching approach.

Part‑time faculty teach a maximum of five three‑credit courses in the fall and spring semesters, based on enrollment and departmental need. The college uses common assessments and shared textbooks for courses of the same type to support consistency and instructional quality, and primary course shells are available for some classes.

• Teach classes as assigned by the academic dean
• Evaluate and report student performances and progress in courses in accordance with college and division policies and procedures
• Meet Minimum Faculty Standards for hire and adhere to college policies and procedures
• Promote, develop, and deliver quality education programs with the intent to retain students to graduation
• Demonstrate IWCC’s core mission, vision, and values
• Meet minimum expectations for use of the college Learning Management System (post the syllabus to the course page by college deadlines, record student attendance, and maintain an accurate and current gradebook for all graded course activities) and for reports (roster verification, 5th week and 10th week progress reports, final grades, and course assessments)
• Assess and document student learning outcomes in courses each term according to college policies and procedures
• Organize and teach labs as assigned by the academic dean
• Complete required professional development and trainings
• Exhibit a positive and professional demeanor with all members of the college and community, contributing to a productive and growth‑oriented work environment
• Promote, model, and enforce academic integrity
• Be available to answer student questions outside of class time (student conferences can be held on campus in a designated student conferencing space or via phone, web conferencing, or email)
• Help students achieve their educational and career goals
• Refer students to college resources
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and Title IX regulations
• Adhere to safety policies and procedures
• Other duties as assigned

• Master's degree in Sociology, Anthropology, or Cultural Studies; OR Master's degree in a related field with 12 graduate credit hours in Sociology.
• Ability to pass a background check

• The employee frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, telephone and basic office equipment
