Construction Cost Engineer

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Cost Engineer to join our team. The Cost Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring financial discipline and accountability across projects by auditing and verifying project cost management processes, reconciling budgets and contracts, confirming accurate expense reporting, and ensuring timely change order and monthly invoice processing. This position will report to the Director of Project Controls while working closely with Project Managers and other stakeholders to drive cost control, in support of overall project and company financial health.

This is an administrative position, working primarily at a desk supporting team members who are working in the field and in the office. Typical office hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am until 5:00 pm, but we may occasionally require work outside these hours as the work demands.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and perform audit project cost management practices to ensure compliance with company standards and contractual requirements.
  • Support Project managers through an overview of vendor invoices for accuracy, proper documentation, and compliance with contract terms.
  • Perform contract and budget reconciliations, identifying variances and coordinating with Project Managers to resolve discrepancies.
  • Support Project Managers with an overview of change order processing, including validation of scope, pricing, and documentation.
  • Enforce company policies and procedures related to change management and cost controls.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of costs, commitments, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Collaborate with the accounting team to ensure alignment between project costs and financial reporting.
  • Provide cost-related reporting, analysis, and recommendations to the Director of Controls and project teams.
  • Assist in developing and improving internal controls, workflows, and tools to enhance project financial management.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Finance, Accounting, or a related field is preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience in cost engineering, project controls, or construction finance, preferably within a subcontractor or general contractor environment.
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts, billing, budgets, and change order processes.
  • Proficiency in construction management and accounting software (e.g., Procore, Unifier, RFMS, Sage, or similar).
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and the ability to analyze and interpret financial data.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across departments.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
