Core Tax Services Senior Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and compliance costs, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations, and acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues.
Job SummaryThe Core Tax Services Senior Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizes and communicates risks, and makes top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The role also includes active participation in marketing, networking, and business development while maintaining client relationships.
Job Duties- Tax Compliance
- Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
- Conducts top‑level review of tax return work and resolves all tax issues with the client, involving specialists as appropriate.
- Plans early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as needed.
- Research
- Identifies when research is needed, frames issues, and reports the analysis concisely.
- Provides research methodology for efficient research processes and trains managers and staff on research skills.
- Involves firm specialists as appropriate.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
- Applies firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding ASC 740, FAS 109, and FIN 48.
- Reviews tax provisions and work papers, explaining and discussing provisions with clients.
- Tax Consulting
- Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce taxes.
- Applies business and tax knowledge to recommend solutions while managing risk.
- Manages inquiries from federal and state agencies, provides assistance with protests at the appeals level, and implements firm strategies.
- Tax Specialization
- Develops in-depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation (e.g., corporate, state and local, international, transfer pricing).
- Provides or participates in external CPE training sessions and mentors managers on specialization areas.
- Strategy Development
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to benefit clients and the firm.
- Researches and implements tax strategies and provides marketing presentations to clients.
- Other duties as required.
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Reviews work prepared by associates, provides review comments, and trains on current software tools.
- Acts as a career advisor, schedules and manages workload, and provides performance feedback.
Bachelors degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Bachelors degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively delegate work as needed.
- Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills.
- Capacity to work well in a team environment.
- Capability of developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
- Ability to compose written tax advice.
- Capability of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships.
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.
