R&D Engineer Intern

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Job Summary:

Under moderate to extensive supervision, apply mechanical & electrical engineering principles to product development projects; generate engineering documents and records from qualification tests; perform design modifications in Solid Works to 3D models and 2D drawings; build, instrument, and flow test or pressure test fluid control products and prototypes; navigate ERP for BOM and part number searches; utilize dashboards to track and provide visibility on progress.

Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Examples of

Duties and Responsibilities:

Works closely with direct supervisor and teammates to assist with various product development projects and tasks.

Builds prototypes and assists with test setups and fixtures;
Operates pressure test carts and flow loops to test prototype items;
Generates procedures and reports for prototypes and qualification projects, based on input from teammates;
Reviews industry standard specifications and customer specifications with supervisor to determine requirements for qualification plans and specific test instructions;
Installs and utilizes test instrumentation such as gages, transducers, sensors, and meters;
Utilizes a data acquisition device (Flex Logger) to record test parameters digitally;
Maintains an orderly lab environment and regularly organizes prototype parts and assemblies;
Utilizes Project Management dashboard to access task prioritization and provide feedback to direct supervisor on the statuses of specific tasks;
Utilizes Syte Line ERP to access inventory databases and BOMs;
Performs other related duties, as assigned;
Regular punctuality, attendance, and absence reporting in conformance with company policies is essential to the successful performance of this position; and
Fully comply with company rules, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure safe and effective operations.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent of, but not limited to, the following:

Experience/Training/

Education:

Enrolled in a course of study leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field;
Minimum 2 years of Engineering coursework;
Solid Works fluent preferred; equivalent design software fluency in NX, CATIA, etc., are acceptable.

Experience with Microsoft Office products such as Word and Excel;

Experience with building mechanical assemblies, devices, or systems; and

Experience with building electrical assemblies, devices, or systems.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of basic mechanical assembly methods and tools;
Knowledge of common materials - including various stainless steels, aluminum alloys, and plastics like PTFE and Delrin;
Familiarity with computer file types and server/cloud storage methods,
Familiarity with assembly compounds such as lubricants, greases, and retaining compounds;
Familiarity with sealing methods for pipe and tube connections;
Familiarity with production tools such as torque wrenches and powered hand tools;
Familiarity with ERP system navigation and engineering task management methods;
Ability to independently generate test procedures and qualification plans from existing templates and guidance from direct supervisor;
Ability to coordinate with engineering for production test criteria and instructions, as needed;
Ability to interpret measurement and test equipment, such as calipers, meters, and gauges;
Ability to fluently communicate (read, write, and speak) in the English language;
Ability to interpret basic wiring diagrams for instrumentation and logging purposes; and

Physical Requirements:

Ability to use a computer to access, create, and update various engineering procedures and plans;

Most document tasks are performed indoors where temperature is moderate and controlled by office environment systems, however test environments may be outside or inside at any time of year at the Costa Mesa factory;
Ability to work (sit and/or stand) at a desk for majority of the work day at times; walking and/or standing may be required for a majority of a work day when performing test activities. Length of time performing these physical requirements may vary from day to day and task to task;
Requires grasping, writing, sitting, standing, walking, repetitive motions, pulling, pushing, listening and hearing ability, and visual acuity;
Ability to occasionally reach, lift and/or carry files, materials, items, or assemblies weighing up to 50 lbs. unassisted;
Ability to occasionally lift and move equipment or products in excess of 50 lbs. using gantry cranes or other assisted lifting methods;

Ability to operate office equipment such as computers, printers, photocopiers and other office equipment, as applicable; and

Ability to perform essential functions of the job, as defined;
