The Student Care Graduate Assistant (SCGA) is a live-in position whose primary functions are to assist the Assistant Director of Student Care & Conduct with high-touch student care and conduct strategies and case management, campus outreach, Resident Director (RD) case support, Resident Assistant (RA) training and support, and student success initiatives for both residential and commuter undergraduate students. The role is designed based on an apprenticeship model where Graduate Assistants are invited into many departmental processes to both observe, learn alongside, and contribute.
It is expected that they would finish their time in this role at Vanguard University with a broad knowledge of student care and conduct case management, crisis intervention, residence life, professional teamwork, student affairs, and some housing operations that will prepare them for a future career in higher education. This position is approximately 20 hours per week for about 10 months.
The SCGA assists the Assistant Director of Student Care and with case management, outreach, programming, roommate conflict, crisis intervention and follow-up, RA support, data tracking, and identifying emerging student care and conduct educational opportunities. The SCGA may provide student-facing service in the Residence Life office through front desk support, drop-in hours, and after-hours emergency care.
Essential Functions- Facilitate or assist in the student care and conduct process including serving as case manager and student advocate
- Develop curriculum for RAs and for students in the care or conduct process (topics related to: mental health, resilience, conflict management, selfcare, owning one's impact, ethics-in-community, etc)
- Meet regularly for ongoing case management and student care and conduct trainings with the Assistant Director of Student Care & Conduct
- Work collaboratively with major stakeholders and campus experts who support and engage in student care and conduct processes such as Disability Services, Registrar's Office, Academic Resource Center, Campus Safety, Title IX, Title VII, Athletics, and the Counseling Center
- In collaboration with Assistant Director of Student Care and Conduct, perform administrative duties for case management: building and assigning cases, issuing warnings, sending letters, issuing sanctions, and tracking deadlines through Maxient
- Develop relationships with VU students through high visibility and presence, campus event attendance, outreach, creative programming, and other high touch strategies as identified
- Understand and winsomely communicate the rationale for Vanguard University Community Standards and code of conduct
- Assist with developing & facilitating 12 major campus-wide initiatives for residential students based on current year Maxient trends (preventative mental health, relational conflict, etc)
- May participate in front desk management / dropin office hours rotation and coverage during busy seasons for full-time staff and retreats
- Assist the Associate Dean of Residence Life with identifying, developing, and implementing passive programming that support the needs of students from diverse backgrounds in partnership with Intercultural Student Programs office
- Support, develop, and lead programs partnership with RDs
- Facilitate wellness checks and room searches
- Lead occasional RA staff meetings and an RA support group
- Participate in weekly on-duty emergency rotation
- Participate in Residence Life staff meetings and supervision, Student Care & Conduct Interventions Team, and biweekly meetings with supervising Assistant Director. Additional meetings with key Student Affairs staff also expected
- Other duties as assigned
The SCGA is required to be available for welcome weekend, January re-entry, graduation weekend, and occasional weekend programs. Please reference the Vanguard University Academic Calendar.
Minimum Qualifications- Completed bachelor's degree at start of employment
- Enrolled in an accredited degree-granting master's level graduate program for duration of employment
- Emerging demonstration of intercultural competency and understanding of diversity, inclusion, and equity issues that impact today's college student
- Experience with college students
- Emerging case management skill set (detail oriented, time management, question-driven conversations, emotional intelligence, compassionate, objective, ethically-minded)
- Willing and able to respond to crisis situations
- Able to uphold and abide by Vanguard University policies and residential living rules as similarly expected of resident directors
- Emerging willingness to learn and apply student leadership and student affairs theory and best practices
- Expressive Christian faith. Demonstrated commitment and agreement with the Vanguard University mission statement and goals
- A $12,800 stipend for a tenmonth appointment paid in equal bi-weekly installments
