Overview
The Substitute - Child Care Assistant and Early Childhood Lab Assistant assists in providing care for infant to preschool aged children. The substitute supports in the implementation of instructional and developmentally age-appropriate activities that support the development of the whole child. Under general supervision, substitute employees perform a variety of work in support of a college or district program or office.
This is a non-academic, non-classified substitute position, appointed temporarily when recruiting to fill a permanent position or to temporarily replace a classified employee who is absent. Substitute employment is at-will and does not constitute entitlement rights to any position in the District.
Representative duties include planning and implementing daily activities based on children's needs and interests, maintaining order during group activities, supervising groups of infants to preschool-aged children, maintaining health and safety standards, light housekeeping related to children and materials, developing positive relationships with parents and staff, maintaining confidentiality, and performing other duties as assigned that support the position objective. You must abide by all District policies and procedures, including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.
Responsibilities- Assist with planning and implementation of daily activities based on children's needs and interests.
- Assist in maintaining order by observing and guiding activities and behaviors in group settings.
- Assume responsibilities for groups of infants, toddlers, or preschool children.
- Maintain health and safety standards per applicable regulations and district policies (hygiene, handwashing, nutrition).
- Perform light housekeeping and child maintenance duties (cleaning, disinfecting, sanitizing toys and surfaces, bedding, etc.).
- Develop positive relationships with parents and staff; maintain professional conduct and confidentiality.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the position objective.
- Abide by all District policies and procedures including BP 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.
- Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent. Experience working with infants, toddlers, or preschool children, or equivalent environment; successful completion of minimum childcare licensing standards; or any combination of education and experience that provides the required qualifications.
- Knowledge and skills vary by assignment; abilities vary by assignment; physical abilities vary by assignment.
- Licenses and Certificates: 12 semester post-secondary units (or equivalent) in early childhood education or child development, and either 6 months of work experience in a licensed day care center, or 6 semester units with enrollment in additional units until 12 units are met, or possession of a valid Children’s Center permit. CPR and Pediatric First Aid certificates are required or eligible.
May require a valid driver license. - Additional requirements:
TB test, physical examination, fingerprint check, immunization records for influenza, pertussis, and measles. Conditional employment may be allowed for up to 30 days for immunization records. See details in original policy wording for exemptions and conditions.
Work is performed indoors and at times outdoors, with exposure to communicable diseases as applicable.
Conditions of EmploymentNon-academic, non-classified substitute employees are appointed temporarily when recruiting to fill a permanent position. Substitute employment is at-will and does not guarantee classification status. Employment is contingent upon verification of employment history, background checks as required by Education Code, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short-term assignments do not include fringe benefits or paid holidays.
