Position Summary

This recruitment will fill four full-time Student Hourly positions for the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management at Oregon State University (OSU). The employee(s) will serve as crew members to collect data for the Pacific Northwest Permanent Sample Plot Program to understand long-term patterns and mechanisms of forest dynamics across diverse forest types in Oregon and Washington. Training will cover forest succession, tree mortality, and post-fire ecology in mature and old-growth forests of the Cascade Mountains and Coast Range.

We seek individuals who are interested in ecological research, are detail-oriented, and enjoy working outdoors as part of a team.

The crews will be based at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest near Blue River, Oregon. Apartment-style housing will be provided.

Position Duties
  • 50% Measure and map trees and record forest inventory data:
    Identify tree, shrub, and herbaceous species; use diameter tape to measure trees; use a compass and laser or tape to map tree locations; assess condition of tree stem and canopy; assess condition and causal agents of dead trees; use a hammer and pliers to attach and maintain tree tags.
  • 20% Locate and navigate to study plots:
    Use electronic georeferenced maps to plan driving/hiking routes; may use GPS units, road maps, topographical maps, and compass; hike off-trail in steep, brushy terrain to permanent plot locations; reestablish plot corners as needed.
  • 15% Record and check data quality and completeness:
    Record data with electronic data recorders (or paper forms); review data forms/files for accuracy; upload electronic data files daily or scan paper data.

    Qualifications Required
    • Currently enrolled in forestry, botany, natural resources, environmental science or closely related field.
    • Ability to follow complex data-collection procedures.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others in a professional, safe manner.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 40 pounds.
    • Must be academically enrolled and meet applicable enrollment standards (details below).

    Enrollment standards (illustrative):

    • High School student:
      Regularly enrolled in high school or homeschooling
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

    * International students may have reduced hours and must obtain an approved reduced course load from the Office of International Services (OIS) and provide documentation to the Student Employment Center.

    Preferred (Special) Qualifications

    • Experience or training in forest inventory methods and measurements.
    • Experience navigating mountainous terrain using AVENZA, Gaia, GPS, compass, and map.
