Position Summary

This recruitment is to fill one part‑time (maximum 24 hours per week) Student Assistant position for the Office of Precollege Programs (PCP) at Oregon State University (OSU). The PCP mission is to provide engaging learning experiences rooted in equity and inclusion to promote youth success. The program supports and oversees a wide range of youth outreach activities and academic programs that broaden participation in STEM, increase college access, academic preparation, and career awareness for Oregon’s youth.

The iINVENT Program is the PCP’s Invention Education program, offering introductory experiences in invention education to elementary, middle, and high school learners. Learners are introduced to human‑centered design, transfer skills, identify community issues, and problem‑solve with innovative inventions.

During the Winter, Spring, and Fall terms (15 hours weekly), the Student Assistant will support planning, preparation, and execution of all three iINVENT programs. During the summer (40 hours weekly) the Assistant will work with a team to lead mobile Summer Camps in rural Oregon communities.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and inventory curriculum kits for iINVENT programs.
  • Lead in‑person and virtual program sessions with elementary, middle, and high school students.
  • Create digital marketing materials to promote iINVENT and recruit teachers/students.
  • Maintain a welcoming, safe, and positive environment for all participants.
  • Coordinate with OSU student team members for on‑site logistics (check‑in, snack time, check‑out, parent communication).
  • Communicate concerns and updates regularly with OSU Program staff.
  • Inventory supply kits and restock as needed.
  • Adhere to academic enrollment and standing requirements.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
  • Meeting academic standing requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible.
  • Minimum enrollment:
    High School student – regular enrollment;
    Undergraduate/post‑baccalaureate – 6 credit hours/term;
    Undergraduate international – 12 credit hours/term*;
    Graduate student – 5 credit hours/term;
    Graduate international – 9 credit hours/term*.

* International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full‑time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience working with youth, e.g., summer camp setting, field instructor, lead instructor, site‑coordinator, camp counselor, or any informal educator role.
  • Experience managing youth in large and small groups.
  • Experience engaging with youth from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience coordinating logistics for an event or program.
  • Demonstrated history of delivering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics content to middle or high school students.
  • Graphic design experience.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule

15 hours per week during Winter, Spring, and Fall terms. Up to 40 hours per week during summer, depending on program schedule. Exact start/end dates of summer schedule will vary. Students are required to work 40 hours per week while camps are in session (approximately 6‑8 weeks). Off‑weeks may offer part‑time work.

Required Qualifications
  • Critical or security‑sensitive position: must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined position qualified per OSU Standard 576‑055‑0000 et seq. Incumbents will self‑report convictions;
    Youth Program incumbents may have additional checks every 2 years.
  • Driving requirement: must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in the state of residence, and be determined position qualified. Self‑report convictions as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125‑155‑0200 and OSU Standard 576‑056‑0000 et seq.
  • OSU will conduct a review of the National Sex Offender Public website prior to hire.
