Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill three (3) part‑time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Barometer Editor‑in‑Chief positions for the Orange Media Network (OMN) at Oregon State University (OSU). The Baro Editor‑in‑Chief is responsible for all student news operations at OMN, including daily student‑produced content for the website and social media platforms, print editions and occasional special editions of The Baro.

Position Duties
  • Lead news coverage for all OMN platforms, including developing story ideas/angles, building relationships with sources and determining news values in collaboration with editors and reporters
  • Oversee production of print edition, working with staffers, Photo and/or Creative on page design
  • Update and oversee  and content for all social media and online platforms
  • Attend weekly red‑mark meetings with other editors to review content with adviser
  • Cover breaking and other news as needed, including nights, weekends and academic breaks
  • Establish a sense of urgency in the news operation and create a breaking news culture to ensure OMN content is timely and relevant
  • Ensure that all articles have been copy edited for accuracy
  • Make sure print edition meets printer and distribution deadlines
  • Hold weekly cohort meetings with staff and adviser to train, review the week’s strengths and areas for improvement, plan and execute activities for the upcoming week, month and term
  • Originate and take lead on multimedia projects to tell stories online and on social media, including infographics, timelines, videos, special web pages and other tools to enhance online storytelling
  • Build and maintain relationships with team, partners and stakeholders, setting meetings with officials such as the university president, campus security, marketing officials, University Housing and Dining, ASOSU and others shortly after hiring
  • Grow audience engagement
  • Fully participate in weekly OMN Student Leadership meetings
  • Work to ensure that OMN program content is current, relevant, and consistent with OMN’s mission, vision, and policies
  • Manage payroll
  • Other duties as assigned by the adviser
Communication
  • Meet regularly with OMN adviser to go over feedback and areas for improvement
  • Respond to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
