Overview
SUMMARY:Under close supervision of the Community Center Coordinator, incumbent is responsible for preventive maintenance and repairs to county buildings, facilities, and grounds. Incumbent is required to utilize specialized skills in the building trade’s field. Acts as liaison between the facility, park, ball fields, staff, and patrons, ensuring that all requirements, regulations, and policies are followed.
The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Performs a variety of preventive maintenance routines on building components and facilities, park, ball fields, and cemetery.
- Assists with preparing surfaces for painting, floor stripping, wax application, buffing.
- Assists in roofing work.
- Replaces and repairs electric and manual locks and keys and re-keys locks.
- Performs routine electrical work, installs light fixtures, ballasts, plugs, and switches.
- Performs basic carpentry repairs.
- Installs sheetrock, to include tape and float drywall.
- Installs carpeting, vinyl wall covering, windows, shelves, pictures, tile, etc. Installs, repairs, and maintains a variety of plumbing fixtures including sinks and toilets.
- Assists in constructing walls, doors and partitions, including framing, rough and finish carpentry to erect small structures.
- Assists with forming and pouring concrete, to include masonry work.
- Inspects County facilities, parks, ball fields, and trails for compliance with safety standards and makes any necessary repairs.
- Maintains Park, nature trail, ball fields, cemetery, grounds, landscaping and equipment which may include any combination of mowing, trimming of trees and bushes, fertilizing, planting and watering of grounds.
- Provides custodial services to county building, facilities, and park areas.
- Cleans and sanitizes meeting rooms, kitchens, and restrooms.
- Cleans and performs regular routine maintenance to county issued vehicles.
- Operates a variety of hand and power shop tools, tractors, weed eaters, portable pumps, generators and other equipment.

EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two years of responsible building maintenance experience including preventive maintenance and repairs to buildings and/or facilities.
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be considered for current Nueces County employees only.
LANGUAGE
SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
MATHEMATICAL
SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Communicate effectively with others in both oral and written form. Work as a team member, independently exercising judgment and initiative. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:Must have a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Class
C). Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County’s insurance carrier. May be required, within six months of employment, to take training and pass a test to receive EPA certification to purchase and handle refrigerants and equipment, and other additional certifications and training as required by department.
Must pass a criminal background check.
OTHER
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The incumbent should possess some or all of the following:
Knowledge of landscaping maintenance and repair.
Knowledge of carpentry repair.
Knowledge of plumbing and electrical repair.
Ability to operate and maintain a variety of power and manual tools and equipment.
Ability to work under general supervision.
Ability to read, write and do basic mathematical calculations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees and officials and patrons.
