Position: Natural Resources Specialist - Coastal Parks - J13020 - 13070

SUMMARY

Incumbent will work in the fields of wildlife, fisheries, ecology, and natural resources conservation in the public lands of Nueces County Coastal Parks. Responsible for collection and evaluation of field data; working with contractors on various park projects; conservation, management, and restoration activities related to park lands, management areas, and waterfowl areas; assists with beach permitting and concierge services; performs sea turtle patrols;

takes notes and attends Coastal parks meetings as needed. May provide technical assistance with outreach programs to the general public as well as community groups and organizations. Disseminates information about coastal parks projects, coastal bend resiliency, wildlife and habitat conservation through program presentations and other public outreach and educational opportunities. May work and collaborate with federal agencies, state agencies, local government, non‑profits, universities, and public.

Work is planned or outlined and performed under the close supervision of a senior biologist or an administrative or technical supervisor.

Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and other irregular hours. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Implement projects or programs related to the conservation or protection of natural, coastal, or marine resources.
  • Complete biological field studies, data analysis, environmental permitting, and report preparation.
  • Provide technical support to various projects.
  • Conduct environmental desktop analyses.
  • Collect field data and perform other surveys and activities as defined by the Natural Resource Manager.
  • Provides biological technical assistance on endangered and threatened species conservation.
  • Participates in habitat evaluations, species specific and ecological surveys, compiles and reports findings and observations.
  • Use digital cameras, GPS units and hand‑held data devices to collect habitat and vegetation data.
  • Read and use topographic maps to navigate to remote sites.
  • Complete complex animal, habitat, or vegetation sampling techniques.
  • Maintain accurate records and pertinent data.
QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Wildlife Science, Wildlife Management, Ecology, Biology, or a closely related field in Natural Resource Management.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

A valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License is required. Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County’s insurance carrier.

Ability to identify plants and wildlife of the Coastal Bend using keys and manuals. Experience working with global positioning system (GPS) units for data collection and mapping.
