Conditions of Employment: Prior to employment you must provide documentation from a physician of visual acuity and color vision. All acuity testing must have occurred prior to and within six (6) months of the start date. Must be able to obtain a forensic analyst license within 180 days of starting employment. Successful completion of a college-level statistics course is required for new hire licensing.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs complex (journey-level) program management work supporting the technical operations of the laboratory. Duties include assisting the DNA System Technical Leader with overseeing crime laboratory work, tests, analysis, and identification of physical evidence or database samples; interpreting analytical results; developing and instructing staff on new techniques and procedures; preparing technical reports and records; and testifying as an expert witness.
Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs and reviews method development and validation studies on instruments, equipment, and technical software.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:
Education – Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with at least a Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Forensic Science (or related area) and successful completion of at least nine (9) upper level credit hours covering the foundation of DNA analysis (one course must be graduate level), plus at least one college course in statistics or population genetics. Forensic Science programs must be FEPAC-accredited or meet minimum curriculum requirements described in FEPAC standards.
Substitutions noted: A waiver from the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors and a Bachelor’s degree may substitute for the graduate degree; written documentation of prior approval as a Technical Leader in Appendix D of FBI QA Standards may substitute for education requirements.
Experience – Minimum of three (3) years progressively complex work experience in a forensic laboratory in DNA analysis, including at least three (3) years as a qualified analyst conducting/directing analysis of forensic samples, interpreting DNA data, drawing conclusions, and generating DNA reports. Experience with validation studies is preferred.
