Job Summary and QualificationsPerforms direct patient care under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Maintains a safe patient care environment. Fulfills departmental responsibilities that foster the goals of the hospital’s mission and vision statements. When functioning as a Tech First Assistant (Tech III), I demonstrated knowledge of surgical assisting and closure.
What you will do in this role:- Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field.
- Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by “pulling” the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure.
- Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications.
- Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology in order to prepare and assist in surgical procedures.
- Maintains a safe sterile field by: a – positioning sharps correctly b – labeling all medications on sterile field c – understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R. d – Participating in a “timeout” with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety.
- Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instruments to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient.
- Understands the principles of and can competently assist a surgeon during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself.
- Displays the ability to differentiate sutures and their applications.
- Demonstrates the ability to close a surgical site (under physician supervision) with appropriate suture.
- Demonstrates a teamwork approach in the care of a patient during the perioperative phase.
