Job Description

The Dentist will provide dental services to residents at State Supported Living Centers and selected individuals in community settings. The role involves advanced dental care, treatment planning, and oversight of dental staff. Dental treatment to HHS employees injured in the scope of employment is also performed. The position reports to the Dental Director and works collaboratively with the Medical Services team to enhance overall health.

Job Functions (EJFs)
  • Attend work on schedule, with flexibility for rotating or extended shifts, overtime, and on‑call duties as required.
  • Provide direct dental services to residents with behavioral challenges and complex medical conditions, including individuals with dental malformations.
  • Oversee dental personnel (dentists, hygienists) performing non‑routine care and cleanings.
  • Evaluate dental health and recommend interventions to improve oral function, hygiene, and appearance.
  • Develop and implement desensitization and sedation plans, monitoring medication interactions.
  • Document care, communicate with residents, families, guardians, and community members.
  • Deliver treatment to HHS employees injured during the course of employment.
  • Participate in disaster response, continuity operations, and other agency responsibilities, which may require alternate shifts or locations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Experience in general practice dentistry and use of dental equipment.
  • Expertise in best practices for oral hygiene and health care.
  • Knowledge of dental diagnostics, examination documentation, and treatment planning.
  • Familiarity with ICF‑IID standards, Council on Quality and Leadership certification, HHSC policies, and DOJ Settlement Agreement.
  • Proficiency with basic computer software and electronic medical/dental record systems.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Leadership and supervisory capabilities.
  • Commitment to maintaining required continuing education hours.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements, or Certifications
  • Licensed as a dentist by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.
  • Current registration certificate from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) in place.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • General practice dentistry experience required.
  • 5+ years of general practice experience preferred.
Additional Information
  • Background checks: fingerprint criminal background, pre–employment drug screen, CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and LEIE.
  • Selective Service registration required for males aged 18‑25.
  • Random drug testing applicable to all employees.
  • Work hours may be flexible; weekends and holidays likely required.
  • Minimum applicant age: 18.
