Overview

The City of Coronado is accepting applications for Evidence and Property Technician
.

Department: The Coronado Police Department provides outstanding law enforcement services to the community of Coronado.

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of technical duties in the collection, identification and preservation of Police Department property and evidence; to maintain accurate documentation of property and evidence records; to collect and examine evidence from crime scenes; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility, including basic computer forensics and assisting in the Records Division as required.

Responsibilities
  • Receive, record, classify and store various types of evidence property; ensure security of evidence and property; transport property and evidence to forensic examination labs; prepare evidence and provide testimony in court.
  • Examine and preserve evidence at crime scenes for latent impressions and other physical evidence; photograph crime scene evidence, criminal autopsy and fingerprints.
  • Dust and lift latent prints and fingerprints, including the preparation and entry of fingerprints with the California Identification System (CAL-) and Automated Fingerprint Identification System/Live Scan and other related systems.
  • Prepare reports, evidence lists and property tags for collected property and evidence; maintain and operate a computerized inventory system; input data and update property and evidence files; check out and release evidence to appropriate persons; update and maintain the tracking system to reflect chain of custody for each item.
  • Assist in the conduct of periodic audits of the Property and Evidence function to ensure accuracy.
  • Dispose of or release property at the conclusion of court action; notify owners; respond to requests and inquiries concerning release of property; ensure compliance with department policies and procedures.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public and law enforcement staff regarding evidence and property retention, release guidelines and lab practices.
  • Deal courteously and efficiently with the public in an office or field environment.
  • Maintain a computer inventory of all Department property.
  • Participate in training programs.
  • Perform routine administrative staff work as assigned.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications
  • Experience: At least two (2) years of increasingly responsible property and collection and preservation experience.
  • Education/Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized training in crime scene investigation, property and evidence collection or a related field is desirable.
  • License

    Required:

    Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record.
Examination & Selection Process
  • Application Review Phase: A completed City of Coronado employment application and resume must be received by the Human Resources Division by 11:59 PM PST on February 19, 2026. Copies of licenses and/or certificates must be attached to the application. Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience.
  • Examination Phase: Applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview (pass/fail).
  • Department Interviews: Top candidates will be selected based on feedback from the panel for final interviews with the Chief of Police and Police Captain.
  • Candidate Selection Process: Top candidates will be required to submit a Personal History Statement (PHS) and other required forms for review. Candidates will be subject to successful completion of a polygraph examination and a thorough law enforcement background check conducted by a licensed background investigator prior to the final interview.
