Job Summary

The Pharmacy Clerk/​Courier is a hybrid role that supports pharmacy operations, customer service, and deliverables across VG locations. Responsibilities include patient communication, prescription processing, inventory management, cashier duties, curbside delivery, and vehicle maintenance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Communicate with patients politely and discreetly; clarify questions; refer medication‑related questions to the pharmacist.
  • Verify identity of prescription pick‑up customers.
  • Provide temporary support for other pharmacy clerk positions as needed.
  • Maintain work‑area security; lock pharmacy when pharmacist is not present.
  • Remove expired medications from shelves when directed.
  • Assist with drug inventory and place orders as required.
  • Separate IMP and expired medication stock.
  • Contact patients as required.
  • Perform cashier duties using the Point‑of‑Sale system.
  • Enter patient demographics and billing information into the computer.
  • Accept refill requests by prescription number.
  • File prescriptions in the pharmacy system.
  • Assist with curbside delivery and mailing prescriptions.
  • Transport filled medication prescriptions to/from VG sites, including Beaverton, Hillsboro, McMinnville, and Newberg.
  • Serve as courier for other VG sites; transport medical equipment, interoffice mail, supplies, charts, and miscellaneous items daily.
  • Maintain vehicle (fuel, oil, cleaning); schedule maintenance; keep a maintenance calendar.
  • Load delivery materials into the vehicle safely.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by pharmacy leadership.
HIPAA Requirements

Access to PHI for transportation and administrative duties. Minimum necessary standard applies to patient demographics, clinical information, scheduling functions, and pharmacy management system data.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish (spoken and written).
  • Acceptable driving record.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license; eligible for the center’s insurance policy.
  • Proof of liability insurance.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle or eligibility to use a company vehicle.
Education & Experience
  • Over 21 years old.
  • High‑school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience as pharmacy clerk in a busy environment, collaborating with patients and professional staff; experienced in ordering, returns, and stocking.

Physical Requirements
  • Standing and walking up to 100 %.
  • Lifting 5‑20 lb; occasionally 20‑40 lb.
  • Driving/sitting up to 70 %.
  • Stoop, bend, and reach regularly; may use step stools.
  • Typing and reading for extended periods.
Working Environment & Physical Hazards
  • Well‑lit, ventilated workplace.
  • Potential exposure to drug vapors, powdered antibiotics, and blood‑borne pathogens; infection control required.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals possible.
Equipment Used
  • Computer with pharmacy software, databases, word processing.
  • Telephone, fax, copier, printer, scanner.
  • Cash register / Point‑of‑Sale system.
  • Clinic vehicles.
  • Electronic ordering device.
Immunization

Staff must meet immunization requirements per VGMHC policy and applicable guidelines.
