Salary/Benefits:
Salary is between £33,048 and £38,169 (Pro-Rata) per annum DOE and Qualifications, 45 days annual leave (Pro-Rata) plus Bank holidays, Teacher’s Pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses. Note – Salary and annual leave entitlement is for that of a Qualified Lecturer.

Hours/Weeks: 37 hours per week – 36 weeks per year

Fixed Term – Full Time – Fixed until 31 March 2027

About

The Role

We are currently seeking an English Lecturer to join our English and Maths department at The Bedford College Group as Maternity Cover.

Responsibilities
  • High‑Quality English Teaching – Plan, deliver and assess engaging English lessons across levels, adapting resources, monitoring progress, providing feedback, and ensuring a positive, professional learning environment.
  • Curriculum Development & Quality Improvement – Contribute to curriculum review, innovation and alignment with funding priorities; take part in quality assurance, standardisation, learner voice, and strategies aligned with Ofsted’s EIF.
  • Learner Support & Engagement – Provide individual and group tutorials, promote attendance and positive behaviour, support wellbeing and progression, and organise activities that enrich the learner experience.
  • Collaboration, Compliance & Professional Practice – Work with colleagues and external partners, uphold safeguarding, EDI, British Values and Health & Safety, engage in meetings and cross‑college activities, and maintain accurate administrative records.
  • Extended Duties for Qualified Lecturers – Lead qualification/curriculum areas, act as a designated tutor, mentor new staff, and work with Learning Coaches to pilot and embed innovative teaching and assessment approaches.
About You
  • Qualifications & Subject Expertise – Relevant English degree or Level 5 qualification, GCSE English and Maths (C/4+), and a teaching qualification (Cert Ed/PGCE or willingness to achieve).
  • Teaching Experience & Pedagogical Skills – Recent experience teaching and assessing GCSE English, strong classroom management, ability to inspire learners, and understanding of current English education developments and FE reform.
  • Inclusive Practice & Learner Support – Experience supporting diverse learners to positive outcomes, ability to create inclusive learning environments, maintain professional boundaries, and uphold safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Digital Skills, Organisation & Collaboration – Competent with Microsoft 365, Pro Suite and digital learning platforms, with strong planning, admin and communication skills, plus proven teamwork and cross‑department collaboration.
  • Flexibility, Professionalism & Commitment – Willingness to update skills, awareness of H&S requirements, flexible working across locations, full driving licence with vehicle access, and strong alignment with college values and standards.
