Police Officer Salary:

Starting salary approximately $62,000 to $91,416, depending on experience

The University of Miami Police Department (UMPD) is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community who study, research, work, and live on the Coral Gables Campus.

Responsibilities

A police officer has the primary responsibility to provide Protection of life and property to all citizens on a 24-hour basis. The position may serve as a uniformed patrol officer, detective, community police officer (e.g. “Canes Resource Officer”), a directed patrol officer, canine officer, or a problem solving team officer. The officer provides protective and law enforcement services on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus and may provide special services to the University community consistent with the mission of the University and the Police Department.

The officer is designated as essential personnel and will continue to work during periods when the University may suspend normal operations due to events such as severe weather, natural disasters and/or hazardous situations. Duties are as listed and may be performed in whole or in part depending on assignment.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform in a manner consistent with the University’s Culture Change, Common Propose, DIRECCT Values and service standards
  • Respond to emergency calls and all calls for service
  • Preservation of public peace
  • Provide proper enforcement of state laws, county ordinances
  • Facilitate safe and efficient flow of traffic
  • Complete incident reports and other necessary paperwork
  • Conduct extensive preliminary investigations, both criminal and traffic
  • File criminal charges, testify in court, prefile conferences and depositions
  • Arrest violators of criminal and traffic laws, provide testimony in court
  • Send referrals to Student Affairs as appropriate
  • Administer first aid and/or render assistance to injured or ill persons; may transport to the University Health Center and/or local hospital; request rescue services as required
  • Check the security of university property, patrol assigned areas in a non-predictable manner
  • Patrol in marked police vehicles, motorcycle, on foot, or by police bicycles; may be assigned to a designated assignment
  • Self-initiate proactive patrols and document in CAD system
  • Observe and report unsafe conditions and initiate corrective measures
  • Act as a police dispatcher in absence of a regularly assigned dispatcher; direct patrol officers to respond to calls for assistance; document information in the CAD system; maintain equipment logs
