Summary
Provides clinical counselling and ongoing supervision of staff after assessing client’s social, psychological, emotional, and/or behavioural issues and by developing therapeutic programs and interventions.
Key Duties and Responsibilities- Supervise clinical counsellors, providing regular case consultation, performance feedback, and professional development support to ensure adherence to best practices and organizational standards.
- Provide clinical leadership, mentorship, and consultation to interdisciplinary staff, students, and partners by supporting case discussions, recommending evidence‑based interventions, and promoting effective, continuous care for youth and families.
- Oversee daily operations of walk‑in counselling and allied health services, managing caseloads, supervising interns, and ensuring culturally responsive, evidence‑informed practice.
- Collaborate with inter‑professional teams and community partners to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans for youth and families, ensuring services are coordinated and client centred.
- Design and deliver clinical education and training for staff and service providers using evidence‑based models and adult learning principles; create relevant materials and evaluate effectiveness.
- Support and supervise walk‑in counselling staff and interns, including onboarding, annual performance evaluation input, and identifying learning needs to ensure clinical growth and competency.
- Lead or participate in committees, case management meetings, and community initiatives, representing the clinical perspective and supporting the development of integrated service pathways.
- Engage in public education, staff training, and outreach, delivering presentations, facilitating support groups, and promoting prevention strategies within the community.
- Knowledge and awareness of a wide range of individual and family counselling techniques.
- Knowledge of the principles of Integrated Case Management and ability to apply these principles in practice when working with allied professionals involved with clients.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the broad range of issues pertaining to mental health and substance use among adolescents, young adults, and their families.
- Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory and consultative processes and of clinical supervision models, with the ability to identify learning needs, teach, coach and provide clinical information and supervision.
- Demonstrated therapeutic skills and the ability to apply theory and practice in the areas of case management and individual, family and group therapy with clients with a variety of mental health and substance use disorders.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of trauma‑informed and culturally safe principles of care.
- Demonstrated knowledge of team‑based primary care.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant Acts, pertinent regulations, policy, procedures and other statutory and certification requirements (i.e. Mental Health Act;
Adult Guardianship Act;
Health Care (Consent) and Care Facility (Admission) Act; Child, Family and Community Service Act; and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act). - Demonstrated ability to teach, coach, and provide clinical support.
- Effective listening and consensus building skills that promote communication and lead to a cooperative approach to problem solving and decision making within interdisciplinary settings.
- Ability to manage crisis situations and provide leadership to staff in the management of client crises.
- Ability to make effective referrals in a collaborative manner, reflecting in‑depth knowledge of community resources and strong collaborative skills in working with other community partners.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and understanding of the client population’s cultural and socio‑economic characteristics.
- Able to form a mutually respectful partnership with persons served and their families in which they are helped to gain skills and confidence to address any issues and problems they face.
