Michels Canada is adding a Senior Civil Estimator to our preconstruction team. In this role, you’ll lead your own bid portfolio and collaborate with a team of estimators. You’ll be supported by proposal specialists, fellow estimators, and subject matter experts while preparing bids for civil infrastructure projects across Canada. The position focuses on estimating work related to open‑cut water/sewer/storm pipe systems, as well as TBM tunneling, micro‑tunneling, piling, access shaft construction, structural foundation concrete, buried concrete structures, and other utility components.
This position may be based out of our Coquitlam, BC office, our Canadian headquarters in Nisku, AB, or our Concord, ON location.
- Maintain and promote a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers. Follow all safety policies, procedures and regulations. Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
- Produce accurate, timely, and well‑organized estimates.
- Utilize your technical abilities to analyze drawings and specifications for best construction method scenarios while engaging the SME’s for collaboration.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, consultants, vendors, end users, and suppliers.
- Create scopes of work and issue request‑for‑quote packages.
- Review project bid requirements, participate in site walkthroughs and meetings, review and confirm geotechnical conditions, draft and evaluate risk matrix, and prepare take‑offs.
- Prepare preliminary budgets for all successful tender projects and change order pricing.
- Drive to win bids—striving for competitive, precise outcomes.
- A related post‑secondary degree from an accredited university or technical college is preferred; equivalent trade experience will also be considered.
- Minimum 10-years of construction in Civil works with cost estimating, construction management or field experience.
- Experience working with a large General Contractor.
- Proven success leading pursuits valued between $10M and $250M.
- Experience with Alternative Delivery and Fixed Price bids.
- Strong knowledge of many self‑perform disciplines of Civil construction for the estimate and productivity.
- Solid understanding of construction methods, planning, scheduling, and sequencing.
- Proficiency in bid preparation, quantity take‑offs, trade subcontractor procurement, pricing, and bid closing.
- Comprehensive understanding of contract terms, including risk and opportunity assessment.
- Ability to lead teams and contribute effectively as a team member.
- Strong organizational skills and self‑motivation.
- Experience estimating Water/Wastewater/Stormwater, Open Cut and Tunnel projects.
- Proficient with Heavy Bid estimating software.
- Comfortable working within a standard estimating protocol.
