Commercial Financial Planning Director – General Merchandise Overview of Position

Lead enterprise merchandise financial strategy for The Container Store, establishing assortment and financial targets and guardrails for a replenishment-driven business. This role is accountable for recommending and managing open-to-buy targets, refining OTB tools and processes, and partnering with Commercial, Supply Chain, and Finance teams to evaluate performance against plan and identify opportunities to improve sales, margin, and inventory productivity. As a senior leader, this role helps develop cross‑functional teams and enables clear, confident decision‑making by connecting long‑range business strategy with day‑to‑day execution through analytically sound and operationally achievable financial plans.

This is a full‑time, salaried, exempt position.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead Enterprise Merchandise Financial Planning
    • Own annual, seasonal, and long‑range merchandise financial plans, with a strong focus on replenishment‑driven, core assortments
    • Translate commercial and merchandise strategies into clear financial plans that balance availability, margin, and inventory productivity
    • Ensure plans are aligned with enterprise financial commitments and long‑term strategic goals
  • Open to Buy (OTB) Ownership & Financial Controls
    • Set and manage open‑to‑buy targets at enterprise, category, and channel levels
    • Establish guardrails that enable teams to operate with clarity and discipline while maintaining flexibility where it matters
    • Monitor OTB performance and proactively course‑correct to ensure financial targets are met
    • Provide leadership with clear visibility into risks, trade‑offs, and opportunities
  • Forecasting & In‑Season Performance Management
    • Lead forecasting and in‑season financial reviews with a focus on predictability, transparency, and learning
    • Identify emerging trends and structural risks early and guide teams toward thoughtful, solution‑oriented actions
    • Balance stability in the replenishment model with agility when customer or market dynamics shift
  • Systems, Process & Continuous Improvement
    • Lead the evolution of planning tools, replenishment analytics, and performance metrics
    • Simplify and strengthen processes to reduce unnecessary complexity and manual intervention
    • Encourage a continuous improvement mindset rooted in curiosity, data, and shared accountability
Education, Experience, Certifications and Affiliations
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Supply Chain, Merchandising, or a related field required.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in merchandise financial planning, retail finance, or replenishment‑driven planning.
  • Deep expertise in automatic replenishment models and open‑to‑buy management.
  • Demonstrated success influencing senior leaders and cross‑functional partners.
  • Strong analytical skills paired with sound judgment and pragmatic decision‑making.
  • Demonstrated experience working cross‑functionally with Supply Chain, Stores, Finance, and eCommerce teams to drive business results.
  • Prior accountability for P&L impact or commercial KPIs, including sales, margin, turnover, and OTB management.
  • Is committed to working scheduled hours and has the flexibility to work additional hours based on changing business needs.
  • Knowledge of industry business and passion for following trends in the industry.
