Principal UX Designer

We are seeking a Principal UX Designer to join the epocrates UX design team to shape innovative experiences that clinicians rely on daily, enabling them to provide better patient care through smarter, streamlined interactions.

Role and responsibilities

As a Principal Designer on the clinical Content Experience product zone, you will define and craft the clinical experience across our key platforms—including iOS and Android apps, websites, and EHR integrations. Leveraging deep user insights from research and analytics, you will design high-quality, user-centered solutions that meet UX needs of healthcare professionals. This role offers the opportunity to enhance our platform by integrating advanced AI technologies while upholding the core values that have made epocrates a leader in medical reference.

You will collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and medical information teams throughout the software development lifecycle, providing both strategic vision and hands‑on design leadership. Additionally, you will mentor and support fellow designers, helping cultivate a culture of innovation and excellence within the Content Experience zone.

Responsibilities 60% – Design Execution (Individual Contributor Focus)
  • Lead and contribute to expanding and innovating multi-platform clinical experiences.
  • Own the design of cross‑platform features and capabilities utilizing our design system.
  • Drive the UX design process to deliver effective, user-centered solutions.
  • Collaborate with UX research to uncover opportunities and iterate designs through testing.
  • Embrace experimentation with a “fail fast, learn faster” approach.
  • Work closely with product, engineering, and medical information teams to ensure design alignment.
  • Uphold quality standards in workflow, interaction design, microcopy, and accessibility within the UX team.
20% – Design Strategy and Planning
  • Collaborate with UX leadership to define project scope and success criteria.
  • Partner with product and engineering leads to guide strategic direction for key features.
  • Simplify complex systems and content to create intuitive experiences without compromising critical functionality or clinical integrity.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data in ideation sessions to inform design decisions.
  • Advocate for user experiences, including commercial advertising partner content.
  • Present comprehensive design solutions to stakeholders, incorporating feedback through storytelling.
  • Facilitate problem‑solving sessions and propose multiple solutions.
  • Support product frameworks like the Opportunity Solution Tree.
20% – Leadership & Coaching
  • Inspire and empower the team to deliver impactful results.
  • Mentor designers through guidance, reviews, and ongoing support.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally to champion user experience excellence.
  • Lead by example as a principal contributor and mentor.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that encourages feedback and idea sharing.
  • Ensure that best design practices are maintained throughout all phases of the process.
Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in UX/Product Design within complex informational domains, preferably healthcare or health tech.
  • Skilled in designing across platforms, including responsive web and native iOS/Android apps.
  • Expert proficiency in Figma.
