Overview
The Children’s Ministry Director is responsible for overseeing children’s ministry from birth through fifth grade at Faith Lutheran Church. This role collaborates with staff and volunteers to create a high-quality ministry experience that nurtures faith, encourages engagement, and supports children and families in the Christian Lutheran faith, tradition, and worship.
Responsibilities- Plan, implement, and evaluate ministry experiences for children from birth through fifth grade, including Sunday morning programming and midweek programming.
- Develop, implement, and oversee a coordinated post-baptism family engagement plan that partners with parents, sponsors, and the congregation to support children and families in baptismal living and ongoing faith formation, including milestones such as baptism anniversaries, age-based faith markers, and transitions into new ministry stages.
- Maintain regular communication with families (e.g., mailings, emails, devotion resources, and digital reminders) and invite families to faith-forming events such as parent/child workshops, blessing moments, worship participation, and seasonal celebrations.
- Coordinate church nursery and related family faith opportunities.
- Cultivate healthy, welcoming, and safe relationships among children, families, and volunteers.
- Provide appropriate care and pastoral sensitivity to children and families, making referrals to pastoral staff as needed.
- Promote and support the faith development of volunteer leaders.
- Collaborate with pastoral and program staff to ensure alignment with Faith Lutheran Church’s mission and ministry goals.
- Contribute to the planning, development, and implementation of Wednesday evening worship, including participation as a worship leader as appropriate.
- Serve as the primary volunteer coordinator for children’s ministry; identify and define volunteer roles; recruit, train, schedule, and support volunteers; provide ongoing training, communication, and regular follow-up.
- Develop a large and diverse team of adult and youth leaders committed to caring for children and families in their faith development.
- Be a positive and authentic example of a person of faith; set an energetic, welcoming, and nurturing tone for children’s ministry that encourages faith formation, Christian community, and baptismal living; be familiar with and comfortable teaching within Lutheran (ELCA) theology.
- Participate in staff meetings and program staff meetings; attend continuing education opportunities that enhance ministry with children and families; submit regular summary reports to the Senior Pastor.
- Average Monthly Distribution of Work: 40% – Children’s ministry planning and implementation; 30% – Volunteer coordination and leadership; 10% – Worship participation; 20% – Administration and other responsibilities.
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and timeliness in administrative responsibilities, including regular communication with the Senior Pastor and relevant staff; budget oversight and compliance; ordering and effective use of curriculum and supplies; lesson planning and program scheduling; evaluating ministry effectiveness and participation.
