Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership:
Assigns team members to activities, ensuring staff coverage meets customer demands and redeploying when necessary to support needs throughout the department. - Talent Management:
May participate in interviews and provide input into selection decisions for new associates in the assigned area. - Team Support:
Connects with the team daily to understand challenges, elevating issues when necessary; provides open and timely feedback and performance coaching, redirecting problematic behavior as needed; partners with ASM for formal disciplinary action when required. - Culture and Growth:
Encourages the team to share ideas and best practices for delivering outstanding customer service; fosters associate growth and development through coaching and regular performance feedback; recognizes accomplishments and effective behaviors. - Operational Excellence:
Empowers and coaches the team to follow proper processes, driving operational efficiencies to present department areas that support SMART customer service and sales; monitors and strives to achieve key operational performance metrics; identifies barriers and communicates them, implementing timely solutions. - Issue Response and Safety:
Responds quickly to unexpected events (e.g., callouts, no-shows, unscheduled deliveries) by reprioritizing tasks; monitors safety and security, ensuring proper use of power equipment and daily shrink prevention measures; conducts daily safety reviews and maintains clean, organized store areas. - Continuous Improvement:
Recommends strategies to reduce unproductive time, waste or product loss; analyzes operations to reduce impact on the customer; seeks feedback and pursues self-development; builds cross-functional relationships. - Role Adaptability:
Sets an example by adapting quickly to challenges and changes; in locations without a Fulfillment DS, assumes Front-End Department Supervisor responsibilities with Fulfillment oversight; oversees front-end and fulfillment activities (checkout, returns, overrides, till audits, Pro fulfillment, pickup in-store, install, delivery picking, staging, and fulfilling). - Customer Service and Staffing:
Drives excellent customer service by ensuring front-end support greets customers, answers phones, addresses inquiries, and proactively resolves concerns; allocates headcount based on customer demand across fulfillment and front-end functions; conducts research on shortages/overages and manages cash handling and bank deposits where applicable; monitors Customer Service desk activity and readiness of delivery orders. - Cross-Training and Communication:
Cross-functionally trains in other store areas to deliver top customer service; directs calls appropriately; conducts fulfillment area walks to ensure safety and cleanliness; validates items carried in/out of the store as appropriate; performs other duties as assigned; serves as Manager-on-Duty (MOD) with leadership over store operations, engagement, and staffing. - Store Operations and Compliance:
Ensures aisles are clean and safe; observes and coaches during in-the-moment interactions; hands off shift observations to the next MOD; escalates non-MOD activities to appropriate leaders.
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent experience; education considerations may be waived where applicable.
- 4 years of experience in a retail environment (or 5 years if education requirement is not met).
- Experience providing direction or supervision to teams (with or without direct reports).
- Experience supporting or participating in training, mentoring and developing associates; experience working cross-functionally.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite; ability to obtain sales-related licensure or registration as required by law.
- Experience supporting front-end or back-end operations in retail; experience in customer service roles.
- Experience in a leadership role with direct report responsibility; experience in the home improvement retail sector.
- Experience in a fast-paced retail environment; experience in key carrying roles with MOD responsibilities.
- Experience using store computer systems (e.g., Project Tool, Genesis, Sterling, M2O, Thin Client).
