With plants in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, California, and Arizona, IAS supplies a diverse product line of asphalts, polymer-modified asphalt, and asphalt emulsions to the road maintenance and construction industry. IAS is seeking an energized and flexible self-starter to fill a full-time opening for an Operations Welder 2, 3 or 4 in our Engineering, Safety, and Environmental Department at our Blackfoot, .

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Welder 2 is a highly skilled craftsman position that requires skills and expertise in welding, pipe fitting, fabrication, and general maintenance. Welders may have and use other skills, such as plant operators, field machinists, or electricians. They are responsible for the major maintenance on tanks and piping systems and for fabrication of pipe racks, equipment stands of tank piping systems and for the fabrication of pipe racks, equipment stands, and other items necessary to maintain the safe and efficient operation of the plants.

The welders will be assigned tasks and work independently from formal plans or informal sketches or verbal requests. When jobs are finished, the manager or supervisor will assess the project's needs and reassign welders to new tasks.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures.
  • Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements.
  • Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g., cut material with powered saws to match measurements)
  • Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded.
  • Align components using calipers, rulers, etc., and clamp pieces.
  • Weld components using manual welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead)
  • Repair machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps
  • Test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to discover flaws.
  • Maintain operations process equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety.
  • Maintain welding equipment, vehicle, and necessary tools and supplies.
  • Operate large equipment such as skid steer and extended reach forklifts.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • High school education or equivalent.
  • One year of workplace-related experience.
  • Knowledge of basic welding skills.
  • Basic knowledge of metal cutting using a plasma cutter and oxy-acetylene torches.
  • Experience in using a right-angle grinder.
  • Ability to use and read tape measures.
  • Experience in using and maintaining portable welding equipment.
  • Experience using electrical and manual tools (saws, squares, calipers, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and other equipment necessary to complete projects.
  • Basic knowledge of pipe fabrication.
  • Basic knowledge of tank floor repairs and welding.
  • Knowledge of basic plant maintenance.
  • Knowledge of truck loading.
  • Knowledge of safety standards, such as hot work in hazardous areas and confined space areas.
  • The ability to closely follow safety rules and use protective clothing (face shield, gloves, fall face shield, gloves, fall, etc.).
  • A deft and steady hand and attention to detail.
  • Willingness and ability to assist in other operations as needed to support the business.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions, which includes working inside, outside, or underground, depending on the equipment, materials, and techniques needed for the job.
  • Physical endurance and manual dexterity.
  • Steady hands and strong grip for holding equipment and materials.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, pull, and/or push or otherwise move 5 - 50 pounds daily/frequently.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach/working overhead daily/frequently.
  • Must be able to sit, balance, stoop, and crawl occasionally.
  • Must be able to work in extreme seasonal weather conditions.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective gear daily.
  • Overnight travel required.
