Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and service of County-owned heavy equipment and vehicles. Work includes maintaining diesel and gasoline‑powered equipment such as loaders, graders, excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, and other specialized machinery. Ensures that all work complies with established safety standards, department policies, and applicable regulations.
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues in heavy equipment and vehicles.
- Performs skilled repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive systems, hydraulic systems, braking systems, cooling systems, and electrical components.
- Conducts preventive maintenance services, including lubrication, filter changes, fluid inspections, tire maintenance, and safety inspections.
- Replaces or rebuilds major components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic cylinders, differentials, and drive shafts.
- Fabricates, modifies, and installs specialized equipment and structural parts as needed for heavy‑duy applications.
- Assists in equipment inspections for regulatory compliance and safety certification.
- Maintains accurate service and maintenance records by completing daily work orders and maintenance logs.
- Operates heavy equipment and vehicles for testing and verification of repairs.
- Ensures compliance with shop safety standards and maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requires a high school diploma or GED, supplemented by formal training in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or a related field. Requires at least two (2) years of experience performing maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment and diesel‑powered vehicles.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license; a commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class B or higher is required or must be obtained within one year of hire. ASE certifications in Medium/Heavy Truck (T-series) or Equipment Technician certifications are desirable. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Ability to obtain a forklift certification within six months of hire is required.
