Job Summary

The Manager in Training is responsible for learning the duties of the Store Manager position and developing the skills required for the role. Primary responsibilities include driving outstanding sales results through effective sales techniques, building the team, building customer loyalty through world‑class customer service, and leading the execution of company standards. The position also promotes a safe and productive work environment for all Team Members, customers, and vendors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)
  • Uphold and promote a safe and productive work environment by following and enforcing all Petsense by Tractor Supply policies and procedures.
  • Observe and learn how to build the store team through hiring, staffing decisions, Team Member retention, schedule and payroll management, training and development, succession planning, and performance reviews and counseling.
  • Take initiative to support selling initiatives (TEAM):
    • Thank the Customer
    • Engage with the customer and/or pet
    • Advise products or services
    • Make it Memorable
  • Drive sales and profit through top‑line sales, merchandising initiatives, expense control, profit/loss management, protecting company assets, and reducing shrink.
  • Grow the grooming business and ensure pet safety and care at all times.
  • Generate brand awareness through local marketing events such as pet adoption, community fairs, or parades.
  • Lead the execution of Petsense standards: store presentation, inventory management, freight movement, pricing/promotion activities, loss prevention, audit compliance, and daily task delegation.

    • Handle and resolve customer complaints.
    • Perform opening and closing procedures.
    • Transport and deposit to bank or coordinate with armored car service.
    • Operate cash register/computer and supervise cash handling procedures.
  • Comfortable working with small animals; uphold safety policies for animals in care.
  • Maintain accurate daily reconciliations of cash drawers and vaults.
  • Ensure regular and predictable attendance someplace.
  • Work scheduled shifts and be able to work varied hours, days, nights, and weekends.
  • Paperwork:
    Train on daily, weekly, and monthly processing of required paperwork including invoices, schedules Hod and returns, and POs reports; sales forecasting, payroll analysis, budget review; team member evaluations.
  • Inventory:
    Train on managing periodic price changes.
  • Budgeting/Auditing:
    Train to be responsible for budgeting and sales forecasting; audit store processes.
  • Live Animals:
    Learn how to care for animals during services, adoption, or sale; understand policies around live animals.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years of retail leadership experience with profit/loss, scheduling, shrink control, payroll management, staffing, hiring, supervising, and counseling.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • High School diploma or equivalent; strong literacy,(plugin?).
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Effective communication with customers and Team Members.
  • Read, write, and count accurately.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to resolve issues ethically.
  • Time and stress management.
  • Basic computer skills and math aptitude.
  • Ability to perform and execute primary responsibilities of Team Members.
Working Conditions
  • Indoor environment with moderate noise and adequate lighting and temperature.
  • Work shifts vary; generally 4–8 hours or more.
  • Promote a safe and productive environment schaal.
  • Travel as necessary for training, meetings, or assistance in other locations.
