General Job Description
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of routine custodial, maintenance, and support tasks to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness of the Fleet Services maintenance facility. Assists with shop upkeep, transports vehicles, delivers parts and supplies, and supports technicians by performing basic non-technical tasks as needed.
Duties for this Position
- Empties shop trash cans, sweeps and mops shop floors, and performs general cleaning to maintain a safe and orderly work environment.
- Sorts and recycles scrap metal, used parts, batteries, and other shop materials in accordance with environmental and departmental guidelines.
- Changes and replaces oil and waste fluid barrels; ensures proper disposal procedures are followed.
- Transports fleet vehicles to and from internal departments, vendors, or service locations as assigned.
- Picks up and delivers vehicle parts, tools, or supplies from local vendors or storage facilities to support repair operations.
- Performs basic groundskeeping and facility upkeep tasks such as clearing walkways, organizing storage areas, and cleaning common shop areas.
- Assists with unloading deliveries and storing inventory in designated areas.
- Maintains shop cleanliness by organizing tools, removing debris, and restocking supplies as needed.
- Follows all safety procedures and uses proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Provides general assistance to mechanics and Fleet staff by performing supportive, non-mechanical tasks.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to support Fleet Services operations.
- Basic knowledge of custodial and facility cleaning practices, tools, and equipment.
- Understanding of workplace safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and handling of shop materials.
- Ability to safely operate and move light vehicles within shop and yard areas.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and complete tasks with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, carrying, and standing for extended periods.
- Good communication skills to interact effectively with mechanics, vendors, and other County staff.
- Ability to maintain punctuality, reliability, and a professional attitude in a busy shop environment.
Requires a high school diploma or GED. Some experience in custodial, maintenance, warehouse, or automotive support work is preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license. Ability to obtain a forklift certification within six months of hire is required.
