Power Distribution Electrician – 1st Shift
University of Connecticut – Storrs Campus – Facilities Operations – Full‑time – 37.5 hrs/week – Salary $68,622–$87,595.
OverviewPermanent, full‑time Power Distribution Electrician positions open only to current UConn NP‑2 QCW Electricians who have completed the two‑year training with energized voltage over 600 v, Eversource ESOP 100 high‑voltage training, and hold an active E‑1 or E‑2 license. Positions categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff; must be willing to work during emergency closures, delayed openings, and respond to emergencies on overtime, nights, weekends, holidays.
Responsibilities- Install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground power distribution systems (utility metering systems, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, transformers, switchboard wiring and controls).
- Perform electrical repair work on substation structures and systems, cutouts, re‑closers, and wiring.
- Utilize specialized electrical and computerized equipment (thermal infrared imaging, meters, voltmeters, ammeters, monitor software) to conduct repairs and analyze power plant electrical generation performance.
- Interpret electrical drawings, diagrams, and schematics to initiate repairs and verify high‑voltage switching procedures.
- Perform Lock Out/Tag Out safety procedures, pole work, confined space work, and maintain sub‑station and transformer connections.
- Maintain required records and recommend adjustments to Power Plant Operators.
Four (4) years of experience performing highly skilled work in the electrical trade area.
Minimum Qualifications – Special ExperienceTwo (2) years of the General Experience must have included some experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical equipment and machinery with an energized voltage over 600 v.
Special Requirements- Current motor vehicle operator license.
- Current Connecticut E‑1 or E‑2 license.
- Eversource ESOP 100 High Voltage training and certification.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical blueprints.
- Knowledge of and experience working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) (AiM).
- Experience using an iPad.
- Experience in a union environment at a college/university.
- Commercial Driver’s License, CDL – Class A or B.
- Experience maintaining high‑voltage substations and performing mark‑outs with CBYD and locating high‑voltage underground cables.
- Experience with 4160 high‑voltage power systems and high‑voltage generation plants.
- Bucket truck operator experience on overhead high‑voltage equipment.
Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs, walk stairs, climb ladders, use ladders, scaffolding, high‑lifts, and enter confined spaces. Work may involve moderate to heavy weights, high‑voltage apparatus, extreme weather, and exposure to risk of injury.
