Overview
The Public Safety Officer, under the supervision of the Public Safety Lt., patrols assigned areas of the Medical Center to identify and/or respond to unsafe conditions and emergencies. The officer answers calls for service pertaining to unauthorized or illegal activity within the building or campus grounds. All officers respond to emergencies and assist with combative patients or visitors, fire alarms, infant/child abduction, active shooter, and other urgent situations.
Officers perform routine inspections for hazards and unusual situations, lock or unlock doors, handle trespassing issues, property receipt and issue, and deceased patient transport. Officers are routinely assigned the task of testing and inspecting Public Safety and safety equipment throughout the campus on a monthly basis.
- Respond to emergencies and calls for service related to safety, security, and incidents on campus.
- Inspect for hazards and unusual situations; lock/unlock doors.
- Handle trespassing issues, property receipt and issue, and related duties (e.g., deceased patient transport).
- Test and inspect Public Safety and safety equipment campus-wide on a monthly basis.
- Document rounds, prepare incident reports, and submit reports by the end of the shift in which the incident occurred.
- Proficiently use RMS Public Safety incident computer-based system and VH Risk Qual System; communicate confidentially as appropriate.
- Monitor and respond to alarms and safety systems (fire, infant abduction, security, environmental risks, etc.).
- Assist law enforcement as needed and provide public safety support to staff and patients.
- Must be able to work well with individuals at all levels, from administrators and physicians to patients and visitors.
- Ability to think quickly, apply applicable laws and VH policies, and be a problem solver.
- Demonstrate customer excellence and align with VH mission, vision, and values.
- Strong working knowledge of the facility and campus grounds; ability to analyze and coordinate responses to all alarms.
- Ability to communicate information confidentially and select appropriate communication methods.
- Document thoroughly and maintain professional conduct; provide escorts and directions as needed.
High School Diploma or GED required.
ExperienceOne year of previous experience in law enforcement, public safety, college and/or fire departments is preferred.
Certification & Licenses- Valid driver’s license required.
- BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider required prior to orientation completion.
- International Association for Healthcare Public Safety and Safety Basic Exam within 1 year required.
- ASP baton, handcuff, OC spray and aggression management training within 6 months required.
- Good public relations and communication skills.
- Ability to interact successfully with individuals of varying backgrounds and ethnicities.
- Ability to work with individuals with special needs as applicable.
- Compassion and willingness to help others when situations warrant it.
- Willingness to work at any Valley Health System facility (assignments may be temporary or permanent).
- Ability to work on alternate shifts, holidays, and weekends.
