Overview
Mail Handler / Mail Handler Trainee openings at UConn Facilities Operations, Storrs Campus. Full-time, permanent, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (37.5 hours per week with a 30-minute unpaid lunch). Reports to the Mail Services Supervisor. Open to the Public; current qualified UConn NP-2 employees receive preference in hiring.
Salary ranges vary by class:
Mail Handler $43,571.00–$55,176.00 yearly;
Mail Handler Trainee $41,213.00–$51,500.00 yearly. Hourly rates noted for each classification; rates are non-negotiable for new state employees. Benefits include medical and dental insurance.

Responsibilities- Handle, sort, distribute, and route incoming and interoffice mail; operate postage equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales; weigh and stamp mail.
- Drive state vehicles for mail delivery; pick up/deliver mail to U.S. Post Offices; sign for insured, certified, and special-delivery mail; maintain records; schedule vehicle maintenance; provide postal service assistance to customers.
- May supervise student employees and drive UConn Mail Services box trucks and vans to delivery points on Storrs Campus and off-campus locations.
- Perform related duties as required for the Mail Handler role;
Mail Handler Trainee receives training to perform tasks as outlined in the class specification.
- Knowledge, Skill and Ability: Oral and written communication; interpersonal skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; basic arithmetic; computer software; mechanical ability. Mail Handler also requires knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates, and classes of mail; ability to operate postal processing equipment.
- Mail Handler: One year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.
- Mail Handler Trainee: Any experience/training providing the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
- Possess current licenses, permits, and/or certifications as required by the appointing authority.
- May be required to travel; must have a current motor vehicle operator license.
- Ability to multi-task; ability to lift 70 lb. packages; knowledge of mail piece design and bulk mail postage regulations; ability to troubleshoot mail processing equipment.
- Experience with customer service; effective verbal and written communication; supervisory ability.
Must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual/auditory acuity to perform duties. Pre-employment physical including a functional capacity exam is required and may be applicable for NP-2 and external candidates. Duties involve driving and operating motor vehicles (vans, box trucks, pickups), walking between locations, and lifting up to 70 lbs.
