The Facilities Operations Department at UConn’s Storrs Campus has one opening for an Electronic Integrated Control Systems (EICS) Technician. The position supports the Cogeneration Plant, which supplies high‑pressure superheated steam, electrical power, and chilled water to campus. Responsibilities also include work at the South Campus Geothermal System and Chiller Plant under construction (expected operational in late 2027). The role reports to a Lead Power Plant Operator and is a permanent, full‑time first‑shift position (Mon–Fri, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., unpaid ½‑hour lunch).
The base hourly rate is $41.33 for new State employees; current NP‑2 employees receive a step‑based rate. The position is classified as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff and requires willingness to work during emergencies, overtime, and possess a valid motor vehicle operator license.
- Operate, monitor, and maintain plant equipment and associated control systems to ensure safe and efficient production of steam, power, and chilled water.
- Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on plant instrumentation, controls, and mechanical systems.
- Detect, diagnose, and correct equipment malfunctions indicated by vibration, noise, temperature, or leakage.
- Calibrate gauges and electronic devices, document performance data, and produce deficiency reports.
- Coordinate equipment abnormality reports and assist in diagnostics.
- Support South Campus Geothermal and Chiller Plant tasks during construction and commissioning.
- Carry out additional assigned duties as needed.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance, industrial control systems, and SCADA/DCS integration.
- Proficiency with electronic instrumentation calibration and troubleshooting.
- Experience with industrial automation, process control, and data acquisition software.
- Understanding of steam and chilled water systems, including facility-specific processes.
- Effective oral and written communication; interpersonal skills.
- Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain electronic instrumentation components.
- Computer software proficiency relevant to control systems.
Five (5) years of hands‑on experience in installation assistance, monitoring, instrumentation calibration, maintenance, repair, and programming of electronic industrial controls within a distributed control system (DCS) in an industrial, commercial, or large‑scale environment.
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed- Completion of an Electronic Integrated Control Systems Trainee program (substitutable for general experience).
- Graduation from a two‑year vocational or technical school with completion of subject requirements in electronic integrated systems/maintenance technology (substitutable for up to two years of experience).
- College training in electronics or electrical/mechanical engineering or related field; fifteen (15) semester hours equaling up to one‑half (½) year of experience (maximum two years).
- State of Connecticut Trades license in Heating, Piping and Cooling, Electrical, Plumbing and Heating, or an OE2 License.
- Experience with CMMS (AiM), safety systems, Pi data historian, SCADA, GEifixx, Beamex calibration, or emission monitoring.
- Demonstrated supervisory and leadership ability.
- Operating experience with combustion turbines, fuel cell or geothermal systems.
- Operating experience with industrial boilers >50 KPH, steam turbines, gas/electric/steam chillers.
- Understanding of 69 kV / 13.8 kV distribution power grid.
- Maintenance experience with utility metering systems (steam, water, chilled water, electrical).
- Must possess and retain current valid licenses, permits, and certifications required by the appointing authority.
