Salary: $65,000-$70,000
The Accountant provides essential support for the financial operations of North Stonington Public Schools, including payroll processing, accounts payable, and accurate financial recordkeeping. The Accountant works closely with the Business Manager and Human Resources to ensure timely payment of employees and vendors, proper submission of payroll taxes, and preparation of required financial reports. The position requires strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage responsibilities independently in a small, collaborative office environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Payroll- Review and adjust employee hours in the Time & Attendance system based on department schedules and contracted hours
- Import clock-in/out hours into the district ERP system for payroll processing; adjust for overtime, additional hours, or supplemental pay as necessary
- Verify payroll deductions for accuracy and prepare pre-payroll reports for Business Manager approval
- Generate and submit ACH files for direct deposit, including payroll and Teachers' Retirement Board (TRB) payments
- Prepare and submit federal and state payroll tax payments, including unemployment and social security contributions
- Prepare and process year-end payroll reporting, including W-2s, 1099s, and 1095s
- Collaborate with Human Resources to prepare for new fiscal years, including pay schedules and work calendars
- Prepare purchase orders for administrative departments based on approved requests and quotes
- Enter and verify vendor invoices in the accounting system, ensuring proper matching to purchase orders and authorization
- Process accounts payable vouchers and issue vendor payments in accordance with district policy
- Prepare journal entries and monthly expenditure reports for reconciliation with the Town of North Stonington
- Maintain and reconcile smaller district accounts, including Student Activity Accounts, using Quick Books; record deposits and provide monthly balance reports to account holders
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in payroll, accounting, or accounts payable functions
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Connecticut payroll regulations
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and One Drive; experience with ERP systems and payroll software preferred
- Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and solve problems effectively
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a small office environment
- Primarily works in a professional office setting within the school district administrative offices
- Frequent use of computers, office equipment, and standard accounting software
- Position requires prolonged periods of sitting, data entry, and screen time
- Occasional interaction with vendors, staff, and district stakeholders in person or via phone/email
- Must be able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
