Job SummaryThe Ore Dock Machinist is responsible for repairing and replacing components and equipment at the Ore Docks. Additionally, the incumbent maintains and provides safe conditions and operation of machinist equipment, fixtures, and systems in the docks.
Major Responsibilities- Working knowledge of steel structures to perform installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement as needed.
- Must possess the ability to weld 1 inch plate with backing for vertical and overhead welding.
- Complete machinist work order requests through the work order system.
- Must be able to fabricate and use burning equipment such as arc, air, and burning torches.
- Must be able to read blueprints.
- Must have knowledge of hydraulics, and be able to read hydraulic schematics, be able to use measuring equipment such as flow meters and pressure gauges.
- Must understand the basics of gear reduction, alignment of couplings, removal and installation of bearings and couplings within specifications.
- Be able to read and understand technical service manuals.
- Ensure a safe working environment by following CN's safety policies and procedures.
- The role is required to wear proper safety attire.
- The role is primarily performed in an open environment but may occasionally require work outdoors in various types of weather conditions.
- Travel to assigned work locations or other destinations (company vehicle provided).
- Maintain work schedule according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which includes irregular hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- The role is occasionally performed in confined spaces at elevated heights.
- The incumbent will often bend, squat, kneel, lift, twist, climb, reach, stand, and walk throughout shift.
- Use of hands for repetitive pushing, pulling, and single grasp motions.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Valid driver's license.
- Preferred vocational training of minimum of 2 years.
- Must successfully complete CN training courses upon hire.
- Proven ability to perform maintenance and diagnostic services on equipment malfunctions, and complete repairs when required.
- Proven ability to complete the installation, modification, and repair of various components and equipment, as required.
- Able to interpret hydraulics schematics, apply building plans and perform installation from blueprints, and engineering drawings.
- Good English communication skills (written, oral, reading, comprehension).
- Collaborates with others and shares information.
- Identifies potential safety and security risks.
- Basic computer knowledge.
The incumbent receives on-the-job training, which includes new employee safety training, hands‑on training to learn how to operate the various systems at the docks, and ongoing annual safety training.
