The Optometric Assistant / Optical Assistant Floater provides support across all areas of the optometry practice, ensuring smooth patient flow and delivering outstanding patient care. This position is a floater role, meaning the assistant will rotate among various duties within the clinic, including pre-testing, optical sales, front desk/reception, and patient education.
The ideal candidate is flexible, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced clinical and retail environment. They should possess strong communication and customer service skills and be eager to learn about vision care and eyewear.
Key Responsibilities:Clinical Support:
- Perform preliminary testing (e.g., visual acuities, tonometry, retinal imaging, auto-refraction, OCT scans, visual fields, contact lens training).
- Assist the optometrist during patient examinations as needed.
- Ensure all instruments and testing rooms are clean, organized, and ready for use.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records in the electronic health record (EHR) system.
- Assist patients with frame selection, lens options, and eyewear fitting.
- Process eyewear orders, verify lens specifications, and perform dispenses of frames and lenses, adjustments and minor repairs.
- Educate patients on eyewear maintenance and lens care.
- Coordinate with optical labs for order tracking and follow-ups.
- Communicate with patients regarding glasses orders and status updates.
- Greet patients, assist with checking in, verifying insurance, and updating patient information when needed.
- Schedule and confirm appointments, and handle patient inquiries.
- Process payments and maintain accurate financial records when needed.
- Support overall office operations as needed (inventory, ordering, data entry, phone coverage).
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in an optometry or ophthalmology office preferred but not required—training will be provided.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
- Flexible and adaptable; able to shift responsibilities based on clinic needs.
- Basic computer proficiency; experience with EHR or optical software a plus.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.
- Manual dexterity for operating optical instruments and adjustments.
