LIBRARY ASSISTANT - PART-TIME (AFTON RIDGE)

This is a part-time position working at the Afton Ridge Library. Employees may be required to provide coverage at other branch locations as operational needs require.
Work Hours
20 hours per week:
Monday – Wednesday 4:00 pm–8:00 pm, rotating Friday/Saturday 9:00 am–6:00 pm.
Hiring Range and Pay Grade
Hourly salary: $16.22 – $19.38. Pay grade: 10.
- Provide general library services at circulation desk; register patrons; check in and out books and other materials; empty book drop.
- Assist patrons with locating and selecting library materials; assist patrons with placing holds on materials.
- Prepare and present programs for children, teens, and adults; publicize those programs.
- Create and maintain bibliographies for reader’s advisory; create displays.
- Provide reference and reader’s advisory services and services to the homebound.
- Shelf library materials; perform shelf reading and straightening.
- Conduct scheduled library tours.
- Assist library patrons with the use of library computers and related technology and equipment.
- Troubleshoot minor computer and peripheral issues.
- Track and report relevant statistics.
- Assist in the material deselection process.
- Recommend materials for purchase.
- Handle financial transactions according to county policy.
- Participate in outreach, marketing, and off‑site services.
- Obtain books and materials from other libraries via inter‑library loan.
- Participate in coordination of volunteers.
- Open and close the library as assigned.
- Perform related tasks as required.
General knowledge of basic library procedures, methods, and techniques; interest in books and reader interest levels; familiarity with library circulation functions; understanding of office procedures and record‑keeping techniques; initiative and independent judgment; adeptness with library equipment, technology, and resources; ability to establish effective working relationships with patrons and associates.
Minimum Education / Experience RequirementsGraduation from an accredited community college with major coursework in education, history, literature, or a related field; some experience involving public contact. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.
Special RequirementsMay require possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in North Carolina. Position may be safety‑sensitive as defined by the Drug‑Free Workplace Policy.
Physical RequirementsMedium work requiring exertion of up to 50 lb occasionally, up to 20 lb frequently, and up to 10 lb constantly; involves climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication, hearing, and visual acuity are required.
