Job Description
The Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) provides a supervised, safe, therapeutic environment for the developmentally disabled, and/or mentally ill in long-term care and acute settings. This RN is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical care to patients, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of both direct and indirect care. As an integral member of the interdisciplinary team, the nurse delivers patient and community-centered care, advocating for patients and their families by acting as a liaison and upholding their rights and beliefs.
Utilizing evidence-based medical practices, the RN effectively manages unexpected and emergent situations, promptly addressing and treating a variety of injuries and illnesses with professionalism and expertise.

- Oversee the units and serves as a resource to nursing staff in maintaining a safe, therapeutic, and caring environment on the units and throughout the hospital.
- Act as role models for the delivery of safe and therapeutic nursing care.
- Identify and communicate clinical and administrative concerns to Executive Nursing Leadership and/or the Executive on Call.
- Initiate Emergency Preparedness Plan and Patient Care Services Continuity of Operations Plans when needed in emergency situations.
- Monitor staffs' adherence to the Policies and Standards.
- Monitor staffing throughout the hospital.
- Demonstrate positive leadership.
- Conduct physical assessments of patients, including psychiatric or admissions.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Administer medications and monitor their effects.
- Provide therapeutic interventions and crisis management.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to coordinate patient care.
- Manage delegated tasks to Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Certified Nursing Assistants.
- Educate patients and their families about treatment plans and health management.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care.
- Advocate for patient rights and ensure a safe treatment environment.
- Execute charge nurse responsibilities.
- Process physician orders.
- Monitor vital signs.
- Test blood glucose levels.
- Complete treatments.
- Conduct pain assessments.
- Change dressings.
- Provide venipuncture services.
- Management of the milieu.
- Utilize the electronic health record (EHR) obtain clinical information and to document patient care.
- Communicate both verbally and in writing to report related findings.
- In accordance with Department policies, declare a Personal Safety Emergency stemming from any situation where the physical or emotional safety of an individual is at risk and immediate action is necessary to prevent harm or injury (e.g., physical assaults, verbal threats, medical equipment malfunctions, or incidents of patient/resident elopement) as needed.
- Participate in Treatment Team Meetings to maximize positive results through interdisciplinary care.
