Position: Library Assistant, Concord Free Public Library (Concord)

Overview

Library Assistant, Concord Free Public Library (Concord). The Youth Services team seeks a service-oriented staff member to help create a welcoming, engaging space for children and families in the Children's Library.

The Children’s Library Assistant provides assistance and circulation services at the public service desk in the Children’s Library. Programming responsibilities include leading a weekly storytime and participating in the staff rotation to lead weekly children’s programs in The Workshop, CFPL’s makerspace. This role is suitable for someone who enjoys connecting with families, supporting early literacy, and contributing to creative learning experiences for kids.

Responsibilities
  • Provide positive, courteous service to the public and internal customers in a team-oriented environment to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Perform circulation duties: register patrons for library cards; check in/out materials using RFID and other technologies; process reserves and requests; handle interlibrary loan requests; route items to/from network libraries; assist patrons with catalog searches and using technology (self-checkout, Internet navigation, and accessing digital media); collect funds from fines, lost materials, and merchandise sales; reconcile daily cash receipts.
  • Assist patrons in locating materials, perform reference assistance upon request, and answer questions.
  • Move materials from network delivery or patron donations to appropriate library areas.
  • Assist patrons with electronic/digital resources (downloadable books, music, and other media).
  • Shelve materials and maintain shelf order.
  • Create brief cataloging records and perform data entry for periodicals; sort and return books; manage deliveries and check-ins.
  • Perform special projects and other related duties as assigned; adapt to changing workload with flexibility.
  • May deliver books to homebound Concord residents participating in the Direct to You Program.
  • Maintain regular attendance at the workplace.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, plus 1–6 months library experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; strong communication abilities (verbal and written); ability to interact tactfully with diverse patrons and coworkers.
  • Intermediate level computer skills; ability to operate a wide range of office equipment.
  • Knowledge of library principles, automated systems, and standard office procedures; ability to work in a multi-tasking environment with interruptions.
Hours & Schedule

This position averages 18 hours per week with the following schedule:
Mondays 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM;
Wednesdays 2:30 PM – 8:00 PM;
Thursdays 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM; one in four Saturdays, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM.

Salary

Hiring Salary Range: $22.69 (Step
1) – $27.12 (Step 10) per hour, based on qualifications and experience. The full salary range consists of 20 steps.

Pre-placement & Conditions

Appointment of the final candidate is contingent upon pre-placement conditions, including a criminal record check, a physical exam, and a drug screening. Costs for these requirements will be borne by the Town.

Working Conditions

Normal office environment with variable interruptions. Occasional physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting as related to shelving and materials.

Education & Experience (Summary)

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to communicate effectively; knowledge of library principles and systems; ability to multitask and handle interruptions.
