The New Hampshire Public Defender (NHPD) is an independent, non‑profit organization dedicated to providing high‑quality defense services to indigent defendants across New Hampshire. With a network of offices in every county, NHPD defends individuals accused of crimes in all state courts. Established in 1972, the organization also operates the Appellate Defender Program to support defendants appealing convictions in the New Hampshire Supreme Court.
In addition to its accomplished attorneys, NHPD’s team includes skilled legal assistants, investigators, support staff, and IT professionals who are committed to its mission of justice and service to the community.
This is an hourly position. The rate of pay is $21 – $29 per hour, DOE.
This is a full‑time, on‑site role located in Concord, NH. The Executive Assistant provides confidential, expansive, high‑level administrative support to the Directors of New Hampshire Public Defender.
Key Responsibilities- Provide administrative support to all directors: calendar out‑of‑office days, appointments and meetings, take meeting minutes, and prepare reports/materials as requested.
- Maintain the homicide files of the public defender, including storage and tracking.
- Maintain ineffective assistance of counsel and ADO spreadsheets.
- Coordinate inventory of company property and file culling projects state‑wide.
- Assist in organizing transport for NHPD clients to OFE and treatment facilities.
- Coordinate trial or case‑related travel itineraries.
- Provide support for company trainings and events.
- Provide phone or other support to trial offices as requested.
- Conduct office supply orders.
- High school diploma or GED required; secondary education in administrative or legal field highly desired.
- Minimum of two (2) years of administrative or relevant experience required.
- Positive and professional demeanor.
- Ability to work independently, using judgment and initiative, and the flexibility to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Superior technical skills in the Microsoft suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical requirements include retrieving and distributing files, written documents, or office supplies weighing up to 30 pounds; retrieving and replacing objects from shelves up to eight feet high; sitting and keyboarding for extended periods of time.
