The Company
The Granite Group is a leading wholesale distributor of heating, cooling, HVAC, oil, well and water solutions in New England. For 55+ years, we serve our customers through 75+ branches, 19+ Sink and Spout showrooms and an online store throughout NH, VT, ME, MA, CT, and RI. We are a ‘People First’ company and take pride in our reputation for going the distance for our customers, suppliers, and employees.
For decades, we delight our customers by first taking care of our own employees. We believe that happy employees bring happy customers.
The Staff Accountant performs various general accounting activities such as month‑end close, year‑end audit support, and ensuring adequate internal controls and compliance. As The Granite Group believes in a flat structure and takes pride in our non‑hierarchical culture, the Staff Accountant is given the opportunity to fully own several income statement and balance sheet accounts. You can expect to develop deep expertise in various parts of the business through this ownership as you book journal entries, reconcile balance sheets, and investigate variances to the budget and to historical trends.
Once settled into the role, you will have opportunities for lateral and upward mobility, including rotating within the Accounting team, participating in cross‑functional business improvement or automation projects within the broader Finance team, and other advancement options. If you have a degree in Accountancy and have proven success as an early‑stage Accountant, this role offers a unique opportunity to elevate your business acumen through practical, hands‑on experience in financial reporting.
This is not a back‑office role; you will interact with branch personnel through reporting and investigative work, and you may collaborate on projects that impact the company broadly.

- Ensure income statement and balance sheet accounts are reported accurately and in compliance with accounting policies and procedures.
- Establish business partnerships with key stakeholders of the general ledger accounts you own; invest time to understand their business to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Maintain lease accounting software and prepare journal entries, ensuring new leases are added and lease renewals are updated.
- Identify and drive opportunities for process improvement within the scope of your work.
- Create monthly financial reporting packages for 20–30 branches.
- Assist with various audit requests as needed: annual bank audit/field exam, annual inventory appraisal, and year‑end auditor requests.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Controller.
- Solid knowledge and experience of finance, accounting, budgeting, cost accounting, and GAAP.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency with ERP systems and accounting software.
- Strong Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Teams.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Problem‑solving skills: demonstrated ability to identify problems and perform investigative work to propose solutions.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently while knowing when to ask for help, consistently meeting goals and deadlines.
- Cultural fit: superior people skills to work effectively with co‑workers and others within the company.
- 4‑year college degree in accounting, finance, or business.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as an Accountant.
