Overview

The Pool Manager is responsible for staff supervision and facility operation; communicates closely with staff in the coordination of programs and operations; maintains a safe environment for pool patrons and ensures that departmental policies are followed. The Pool Manager reports to the Recreation Supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare daily lesson plans, materials, equipment and supplies; maintain records on attendance and participants; prepare written reports and evaluate staff performance; supervise inventories and cleanup of aquatic equipment; supervise the daily maintenance schedule throughout the facility; attend in-service training and perform related duties as required.
  • Test pool water for correct chemical balance and treat with chemicals as required by state and local health departments; maintain filtration and chlorination systems; supervise collection and disbursement of cash, and secure cash, pool receipts and tickets; prepare reports on the status of the pool water, facility and pool activities.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain Water Safety Instructor certification; must have a valid CPR and First Aid certificates by the time of hire.
  • Candidate may be required to pass a physical agility swim test as part of the selection process. The test may include:
    Swim 300 yards continuously (freestyle and breaststroke); surface dive 7–10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object; tread water for 2 minutes; exit pool without using a ladder.
Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to graduation from a community college and approximately three (3) seasons of paid experience in aquatics. Paid experience in recreation or aquatics may be substituted for the required education on a pro-rata basis up to two (2) years.

Ability

Perform lifesaving techniques; effectively perform and instruct participants in advanced level swimming strokes and diving techniques; work with and evaluate individuals of various ages and skill levels; maintain and prepare class materials and equipment; establish and maintain cooperative working relations with other staff and the public. The ability to speak Spanish is desirable, but not required.

Age

21 years of age and older

License

Possession of a valid Class “C” driver’s license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Application and Selection Procedure

All completed applications will be reviewed and those considered most qualified will be invited to participate in an appraisal interview. Prior to employment, all candidates must provide proof of both valid and current Water Safety Instructor, CPR and First Aid certificates. Official sealed documentation required upon successful completion of aforementioned training courses. All candidates who do not possess a valid and current re-certification must pass the physical agility swim test (as described above).

Appointment

All employment offers are conditional upon the successful completion of a medical examination, which may include a drug screening, reference and background check. All new employees are required to take a loyalty oath.

To claim veterans’ credit, the applicant must submit proof of service and honorable discharge (showing specific dates of service) on a U.S. Military form (DD-214) at the time of application or no later than the final filing date for the examination.
