General Purpose
Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled general maintenance and repair of City facilities in one or more areas including routine plumbing and electrical maintenance; and performs related work as assigned.
Supervision Received/ExercisedWorks under the general supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor, oversees workers at assigned work site and provides direction, training, guidance, and assistance to lower-level Facility Maintenance Workers; may act as a lead worker.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis is the advanced journey level class in the Facility Maintenance Worker series. Positions at this level perform more highly skilled maintenance duties than the lower level Facility Maintenance Worker II, and have lead-level responsibilities at the worksite, whereas the Maintenance Worker II does not exercise supervisory responsibility.

- Performs semi‑skilled and skilled painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete, locksmith and the repair and maintenance of buildings and related facilities, furniture and equipment.
- Applies paint and other protective finishes to a variety of surfaces using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other related equipment.

- Repairs and installs floors and roofs involving the use of asphalt, tile and other composition materials.
- Performs semi‑skilled and skilled concrete, brick, plaster and glazing work.
- Rewires or relamps electrical systems with power off.
- Installs plugs and switches and performs some electrical work with power off.
- Cleans out drains and obstructions in sewage systems.
- Maintenance and repair on structures using wood, such as cabinets and counters.
- Operates hand and power tools and shop equipment; maintains tools and equipment.
- Works from plans and specifications.
- Keeps and maintains records regarding keys, materials and tools.
- Maintains tools and equipment.
- Changes filters and minor troubleshooting and repair on HVAC units and related equipment.
- Reviews, investigates and responds to work requests and complaints.
- Makes recommendations for the purchase of supplies, materials, tools and equipment.
- Assists in training employees, including the handling of hazardous materials.
- Moves office furniture and equipment or places in storage.
- Performs graffiti maintenance.
- Oversees the duties of Facility Maintenance Worker I and II.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or GED equivalent; and/or vocational training, AND five (5) years of experience performing semi‑skilled work in construction, building, or maintenance trades as described above; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Related vocational or college coursework is desirable.
Required Licenses or Certifications- Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
