GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, installs or supports the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, street lights, electrical power systems and circuits; performs related work as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED
Works under the general supervision of the Traffic and Lighting Foreman; does not have supervisory responsibilities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the entry level class in the Traffic Signal Street Lighting Division. Positions at this level perform routine and less complex maintenance and construction duties are not expected to function with the same amount of job knowledge or skill level as positions allocated to the higher Traffic Signal Technician level. Work is closely supervised. As experience is acquired, employees shall perform with increasing skills and responsibilities and is expected to be performing at the Traffic Signal Technician level.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Receives work orders or project assignments from supervisor.
- Assembles and prepares necessary materials to complete assignment.
- Performs electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, including lamps, pedestrian modules and push button stations.
- Performs electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of street lights utilizing a boom truck.
- Installs traffic signal and lighting conduits, pulls wire, digs and pours concrete foundations, repairs cut outs, sets standards, heads, controller cabinets, and installs traffic signal detector loops.
- Assists in the removal and installation of traffic signal poles.
- Troubleshoots problems involving underground electrical wiring.
- Learns to perform hardware and software installations and upgrades on computers used for diagnostic work on solid state traffic control devices.
- Responds to emergency call-outs for traffic signal or street light outages, including stand-by scheduling.
- Completes and submits routine reports and other paperwork in a timely manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED equivalent; AND three (3) years of related experience in commercial electrical work, OR completion of a related apprenticeship program; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License.
Required Knowledge of:
• City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
• National Electric Code; state and local building codes.
• High voltage electrical services and repairs to street lighting and other equipment.
• Electrical installations of 24 volt to 460-volt single phase and three phases.
• Machinery, equipment and tools necessary for the installation, maintenance and repair of street lighting and other equipment.
• Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuitry.
Required Skill in:
• Reading and interpreting schematics and blueprints.
• Installing, troubleshooting, repairing and operating electronic and electrical equipment and related circuitry, computers, and other related equipment.
