Position: Construction Trainer (Adult)

Position Overview

The Construction Trainer teaches trainees basic construction skills necessary for commercial and residential construction, utilizing established technical and safety curricula leading to certification. The trainer provides classroom instruction, hands‑on work experience, and modifies the Construction and Work Readiness curriculum as required to meet trainee and program needs. Additionally, the trainer will expose trainees to local unions and prepare them to enter union apprenticeships.

The successful candidate has a problem‑solving mindset, high integrity, and the ability to undertake multiple tasks. This individual will also be expected to work independently and must possess the ability to prioritize various high‑level responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities Curriculum Development
  • Design and update training programs to cover the latest industry standards, safety regulations, and construction techniques.
  • Work with a team to develop cohort training schedules each term.
  • Modify Construction and Work Readiness curriculum and materials as required to meet trainee and program needs.
Instruction
  • Teach both theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to various construction trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and masonry.
  • Facilitate classroom content related to construction and workforce development.
  • Provide ongoing engaging hands‑on training.
  • Utilize the Multi‑Craft Core Curriculum (MC3) to prepare participants for certification and access to Building Trades' registered apprenticeship programs.
Safety Training
  • Emphasize the importance of safety on construction sites.
  • Train workers on proper use of equipment, personal protective gear, and emergency procedures.
  • Ensure adequate and appropriate construction safety procedures are in place, taught, and enforced consistently.
  • Prepare participants for OSHA‑10 certification in worksite safety practices.
Skill Assessment
  • Evaluate trainees' performance through assessments, practical tests, and on‑job observations to ensure they meet required competency levels.
  • Keep track of the cohort's progress, completion of training hours, and certifications.
  • Submit elective grades on time.
Hands‑on Demonstrations
  • Provide live demonstrations of construction techniques, tools, and equipment usage to enhance learning and practical understanding.
  • Regularly transport participants to and from approved job‑sites and provide off‑site supervision.
Mentoring
  • Offer guidance and support to trainees, helping them navigate challenges and develop their careers in construction.
  • Arrange and participate in participants' family meetings, service meetings, and team meetings.
  • Coordinate wrap‑around services with other providers.
Compliance and Standards
  • Ensure all training materials and methods comply with local, state, and federal regulations and industry standards.
  • Implement strategies to meet the goals and objectives of the organization's pre‑apprenticeship preparation construction program.
Continuous Improvement
  • Stay updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices to continually enhance training programs.
  • Incorporate current green construction techniques into all lesson planning.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory meetings.
  • Foster positive relationships with community members and partner organizations.
  • Participate in cultural and community building activities/events.
  • Perform outreach to recruit participants and educate the community on services.
  • Carry out intake and eligibility, conduct participant assessments, and complete service plans.
  • Enter data into participant databases and assist in writing periodic program reports.
  • Maintain vehicle log by tracking mileage, maintenance, and repair needs.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands‑on experience in the construction industry.
  • Minimum of 2 years working in a training environment.
  • Industry‑recognized trainer certification preferred.
  • 5+ years of Union experience preferred.
  • Spanish language skills (verbal and written) preferred.
  • Valid California Driver's License, clean DMV record & adequate auto insurance.
